Should President Obama have the power to shut down domestic Internet traffic during a state of emergency?
Senators John Rockefeller (D-W. Va.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) think so. On Wednesday they introduced a bill to establish the Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisoran arm of the executive branch that would have vast power to monitor and control Internet traffic to protect against threats to critical cyber infrastructure. That broad power is rattling some civil libertarians.
The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 (PDF) gives the president the ability to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" and shut down or limit Internet traffic in any "critical" information network "in the interest of national security." The bill does not define a critical information network or a cybersecurity emergency. That definition would be left to the president.
The bill does not only add to the power of the president. It also grants the Secretary of Commerce "access to all relevant data concerning [critical] networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access." This means he or she can monitor or access any data on private or public networks without regard to privacy laws.

And the reason Obama needs this authority is?
Do it zer0...do it NOW.
You know you want to. You know there’s nothing to stop you.
Go ahead...push the button. Make it happen. I dare you.
(Could it be that someone is itching for what will come next?)
Seizing control of the internet would do it.
I've been saying for a while now that the Socialists and their Deal Leader will take one mis-step too far at some point, and trigger something on the scale of an insurrection.

***Oh sure...I’ve got alot of trust in his judgement.
Time to sharpen your ham, CB and Bluetooth chops, and use those devices to work around the system. Bamsy would have to cut off all power to shut that down.
And watch ham radios and class notes take off.
The truth will fight to its death...and then smile for a job well done!
Try us O'Bammy...we are eager to die because unlike you we are reconciled with the hereafter.
You can only look forward to 72 virgins...ahem, versions...of Michelle the Screamer...for eternity.
She's waiting!!!
Yes - it was interesting this week the way the anarchists in London were using Twitter to stay in touch with each other and to plan protests during the G-20.
I listen to Savage and he is convinced that the Dictator-in-chief is going to soon take him off the air.
Of course the Puuuulllosi congress will take about 15 minutes to pass the legislation - 30 seconds to vote, and 14 1/2 minutes to congratulate themselves on eliminating free speech.
Exactly. And we need to get VERY busy doing just that.JimRob should be looking into an off shore mirror site
out of Iceland, with full Eurosat hookup.
I believe that they are...”itching for what will come next”.
They are either convinced that they can push these buttons with impunity, or they are hoping to incite insurrection.
I can see how Iceland, which is much in need of $$$ like everyone else, could make a @#$% killing here. And cell phones and PDA’s can be networked with long-range Wifi and bluetooth devices that can have a working range of many miles with the proper installation, though you might have to have a bucket chain setup.
Because he is the anti-Christ???? Just askin’

Aren’t they pushing for that smart grid thingy, too?
UPS, deep cycle batteries and solar panels, though the latter are of spotty reliability in northern climes. Better than nothing.
HELL NO
US Internet shut down will not effect the white house site.
This looks like the white house will still have world Internet acess while the US internet is shut down by executive order. Same as shutting down the phone system.
Very Scarey Stuff. We as citizens also lose contact with our troops posted abroad.
