And why ND shouldn’t:

“The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor
those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They
should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest
support for their actions.”

U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

Next case...

Do they now believe that a sitting president is unfit to address a Catholic university? It's time the bishops gave a clear and principled response.

They don't want you to know what they believe.

If you did know, they wouldn't last long in their jobs.

Typical lib editorial. People with morals or beliefs should always set them aside for others. It is never the other way around.

I find it hard that the lib writers don't see or care about the rote way they go through life or do their jobs.

“...and pledged to work with him on issues affecting social and economic justice. Do they now find him morally unfit to speak at a Catholic university?”

YES! He is “morally unfit to speak at a Catholic University!!”

Your premise is flawed! This speach does NOT constitute working with him on issues! It is a complete capitulation to Obama’s “culture of death” viewpoint!

"American bishops should remember that it was only a few decades ago that a Catholic was considered unfit for the White House. Do they now believe that a sitting president is unfit to address a Catholic university?"

Words fail me.

This convoluted reasoning is not only senseless, but it explains why this jackass writer was thirty years the religous editor/propagandist at the leftist Newweak Magazine......and he's still at it as a contributing editor.

He will receive an honorary degree because it is the custom, not as a blessing on any of his decisions.

Notre Damned should take the lesson from a historical figure named Jesus. It was a "custom" of certain indivuals to make money in the temple. This man named Jesus turned the place upside down because these so called followers of the Living God were making a mockery of His temple.

I am not a Catholic but I would highly recommend to not honor an individual who wholeheartedly supports the most vile procedure of partial birth abortion. The unborn child in Obama's justice system has NO rights. Is Notre Damned University saying their law degrees are worth as much as a piece of toilet paper?

If Obama wants to DEBATE his anti-life viewpoint, then come on down.

This, however, is giving his viewpoint a stage without contest!

That makes it an ENDORSEMENT of his views!

The honorary degree is a bigger problem than the address. Granting the address says, “We’ll listen.” Custom or not, granting the degree says, “We approve and respect.”

"Do they now believe that a sitting president is unfit to address a Catholic university?"

Not "a sitting president" but this sitting pres..ent.

ND is giving someone whose views on life are completely out of phase with Christ and The Church. His own supposed christianity is markedly different from Catholicism. His world view, if taken to its natural end is likely to greatly increase poverty and human suffering.

Even without knowing what he will say, one surely can wonder why would ND tacitly agree promote his views by seeking to have him speak at their commencement and then further condone and endorse the man by granting him an honorary degree.

What motives are behind ND's request? My guess it is not spiritual or educational enlightenment of those in attendance, but instead, the pursuit of worldly fame and prestige. Not that it matters, but is there a price for sacrificing one's core values and principles on the alter of vanity?

Do you think God would want to hear a clear debate of the issues of life? Abortion is the “sacrament” of the Democratic Party. It doesn’t matter that students voted for him, its like saying a child wants something and asking who is the parent?

Obama is not coming to Notre Dame to press a pro-choice agenda but to address issues that affect all American citizens, including Catholics.

Of course he is coming to press a pro-choice agenda. He wants to relativize the abortion issue and neutralize the faith of believing Catholics on the issue.

The bishops have congratulated the new president on his victory and pledged to work with him on issues affecting social and economic justice. Do they now find him morally unfit to speak at a Catholic university?

YES (btw, it's the awarding of the honorary degree that's the issue, not the speaking) Next question?

Would Planned Parenthood find it morally wrong to honor GWB? You Betcha!

I am Catholic and was so disappointed when I read 53% of Catholics voted for him.
Unbelievable.
I know Catholics that had a booklet from Obama saying how it was ok to vote for him.

The Notre Dame fiasco points out the glaringly obvious situation of the Catholic church. That is, it is time for people who are not Catholic, but call themselves Catholic, to either become Catholic, or exit the church.

This began when immigrants came to America from Catholic nations where the church was an integral part of the political society and secular culture. This evolved many people who were not Catholic, but called themselves Catholic for the secular advantages.

In the tightly knit immigrant communities in the US, such people became the “social Catholics”, who are distinct from the “church going Catholics.”

So what is to be done? Perhaps the wisest thing would be to appeal to the Vatican to deploy several Holy Orders throughout North America on a mission of educating all Catholics, both the faithful and the social, on the orthodoxy of the church.

Their mission is straightforward. To discover the beliefs of the faithful and correct doctrinal error and superstition; and to clarify for the social Catholics that they either abide by the core beliefs of the faith, or that they accept that they are no longer Catholic, so should drop the pretense.

Perhaps the mission should begin with an audit of the Catholic institutions of North America. Of the schools, hospitals and other organizations that keep the mantle of Catholic.

This would be an extraordinary endeavor, and the results of the audit would be guaranteed to amaze the Vatican, in any number of ways.

Such information would revitalize the church bureaucracy, and could mean a century of self-examination and regeneration worldwide.
