American Cardinal joins criticism of Notre Dame
The American Thinker Blog ^ | March 29, 2009 | Rick Moran

Cardinal Archbishop of Galveston-Houston Daniel DiNardo became the first Catholic prelate to come out publicly against Notre Dame University inviting President Barack Obama to speak at their commencement.

In a pastoral letter to his congregation, DiNardo wrote:

I find the invitation very disappointing. Though I can understand the desire by a university to have the prestige of a commencement address by the President of the United States, the fundamental moral issue of the inestimable worth of the human person from conception to natural death is a principle that soaks all our lives as Catholics, and all our efforts at formation, especially education at Catholic places of higher learning."

The President has made clear by word and deed that he will promote abortion and will remove even those limited sanctions that control this act of violence against the human person.

The Bishops of the United States published a document a few years ago asking all Catholic universities to avoid giving a platform or an award to those politicians or public figures who promote the taking of unborn human life.

Even given the dignity of Office of the President, this offer is still providing a platform and an award for a public figure who has been candid on his pro-abortion views.

Particularly troubling is the Honorary Law Degree since it recognizes that the person is a 'Teacher,' in this case of the Law. I think that this decision requires charitable but vigorous critique.

Four other bishops - including Bishop John D'Arcy whose district covers Notre Dame, have also protested with D'Arcy promising to boycott the commencement.

Speaking as one of the "subway alumni" of the school who has had both brothers and sisters attend the university,

Abortion is the “sacrament” of the Democrat Party.

at Notre Dame.

Come one, come all, Catholic or not. It’s time to run to the roar. For more info: STOP OBAMA AT NOTRE DAME.

...and in related news...

Cardinal Newman Society’s petition to UNINVITE Obama. Sign here.

212,488 signatures as of posting time. People, this is phenomenal!

ND will HAVE to disinvite. All they have to say is, "We cannot provide sufficient security, and we don't want the graduation to look like an armed camp."

Or they can tell Obama, "Sorry, YOU just realized you have a scheduling conflict. Something real, real important having to do with some ---uh, job related to the, uh, Presidency."

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops created the policy 5 years ago that NO Catholic organization is to offer a platform or honors to a person opposed to basic norms of morality. Ask them if they are going to enforce this:

Cardinal Francis George
President, USCCB
phone: 312-751-8200
email: mfox@archchicago.org

DO IT NOW--- Bring whistles, kazoos, bagpipes and tambourines – and organize a carpool to Notre Dame!

Wanted to make sure you got this link to the possibly GOOD news about Notre Dame: the UNINVITE OBAMA PETITION now has a phenomenal 220,000 signatures (sign up and send it to everybody in your Address Book!)

And a BIG, BIG PROTEST IS A-COMIN' which stirs my activist imagination and makes me think Obama is gonna unite us after all :o)

(Imagine 10,000 tie-dyed conservatives in the streets of South Bend singing "We Shall Overwhelm....")

Please forgive me if I've pinged you more than once. I'm getting kinda excited, here....

For those of us unfamiliar with the terrain, how about some directions and staging area type data.

As for getting to Notre Dame: South Bend, Indiana, northern corner of the state, about midpoint between Chicago, IL and Ft., Wayne, IN. Here's a Mapquest Map which has a zoom feature so you can go down to street level or up to view the map of the whole region.

For other details, you'll need to get in touch with Randall Terry about that.

I'd bet there would be more than one ring to this circus, some simultaneous plans running in parallel, some tactical secrecy involved.

Thinking of coming? Do it! See you there!

Being Jewish, I'm not sure what his position is now but New York's next Archbishop (and Cardinal to be, I'm sure) Timothy Dolan spoke out against the Notre Dame invitation on Sunday. I'm already looking forward to hearing more from the man.

I heard Teresa Tamio last week really give it back to Father Jenkins.

She said he was doing it as its prestigious for ND. She came back with, "Who's he going to bow before? Obama or the Blessed Virgin?"

Bingo!

I heard Archbishop Doylan's response this morning on Charlie Syke's show. You can hear it on his podcast on his website at 620 WTMJ News Radio.

John Daly is organizing a protest to take place this Sunday, Palm Sunday, @ 2:00 p.m. on the Notre Dame campus. He's organizing many student groups.

Sounds like the Bishop needs a tad more spine. Maybe the tail wags the dog in that diocese.

Dolan --- this is excellent news. It's building and building, and it's still 6 1/2 weeks until the commencement. There are going to be many opportunities for the Board of Trustees to advise Jenkins to advise Obama to discover that, regretfully, he cannot come because of the pressure of his responsibilities as President, etc.

Then he can send Biden in his place, and we can all have a hootin' hollerin' demonstration against him!
