Classic Clinton Phrase Inspires New GOP Strategy to Regain Power Republicans appear to be crafting their own version of Bill Clinton's legendary campaign phrase in an effort to recapture both chambers in Congress next year.

Sixteen years ago, Bill Clinton surged to an improbable presidential victory over incumbent George H.W. Bush, primarily on the strength of a snarky campaign phrase: "It's the economy, stupid."

Now, Republicans appear to be crafting their own version in an effort to recapture both chambers in Congress next year.

Their message: President Obama's fiscal policy "spends too much, taxes too much and borrows too much."

While that phrase lacks the same zing as Clinton's, Republicans have persistently wielded it every chance they get.

"How about “It’s the stupidity of Obama”?"

Rather, It's Obama, stupid!

“So they should keep their mouth shut”

I feel your frustration. I have yet to see a post that hasn't had at least 4 comments that are cynical to the point of absurdness and if they can't defend their cynicism, they just throw the term “RINO” into their posts in an attempt to end all discussion, because as you know, if branded a “RINO” there is no chance to ever regain any credibility or try to defend your stance. I used to laugh at the circular firing squad analogy, but lately I have to say it is credible.

It is called a catch phrase. Once ones attention is caught the as the term implies, then you supply all supporting details, facts, examples etc.

You can't come out with a 20 page manifesto every time you talk to the press or the American people. I think it is a clever way to re-frame an argument that the Clintons feel they successfully rode to the White House (personally I think it was the third party candidate and not the economy the cost Bush the election)over a decade ago.

So what does this have to do with another great catch phrase “Democrat-Lite”? So we should not counter the Democrats on the economy and try to use any contrast between what they are standing on and what we feel we need to stand on? I think what you are insinuating (that we do nothing) would be a better example of Democrat-Lite than trying to meet them head-on in the arena.

I don’t think so. The conservative roots wield more power within the party than they have in the past.

Seeing is believing... I do believe in working within the party, but when those with power run the boat aground, alot of us are jumping ship. Either we throw, the wimps, the maverick and the liberals overboard or we jump ship. Actually, I've already jumped ship... it'll take a lot to get me back.

The GOP accomplished NOTHING to stop the growth, power, and influence of the federal beast when they had complete control and continues to do NOTHING to stop the insane march to bankruptcy and hyperinflation being perpetrated by the evil perverted baby killing monsters currently in charge.

In truth not only did they not do anything, that actually caused much if not all of it.

If we elect leaders and Congress critters that were real Conservatives and not Liberal-lites (McCain, Hutchison etc), we would not have this problem.

The general public has no clue what a Conservative is, except as defined by the media, since there are so few true Conservative leaders in the Republican party.

Less Government. Lower taxes. More Freedom. — has always worked for me as a simple explanation of Conservatism.

You hit the key:
Only taxpayers and veterans have the right to vote.
Ditto for community organizations, organizers, and ACORN that caused this economic worldwide depression with their mortgages for blacks.

I think it is a clever way to re-frame an argument

8 years of Bush signing spending bill after spending bill negates any cleverness about it. Dems will swat this like a fly. I wish they would focus on the now instead of 2012. I've had enough of their incompetent leadership in the House and Senate.

I think they are focusing on 2010. And given your thought process (paying indefinitely for the sins of the father) do we (GOPers) need to come out and burn Bush in effigy in order to exercise his presence from us once and for all? Again, do we just set back and let this budget get crammed down our throats? What is your proposal?

Seems like GOP sniping is the hottest game in town.

Here’s what they should say:

“By now it is clear to everyone paying attention that Obama is a Marxist who has no intention of respecting our Constitution. He is destroying our economy, and threatening our sovereignty, national security, and freedom. Every minute his administration is in office is a danger to our nation and to our troops.

“It is alleged that Obama used felony fraud to convince the American people he was eligible for office, that he has used a forged Certification of Live Birth and a forged Selective Service registration. These documents, along with all other documents that would help establish his citizenship status, must be examined by objective experts, and if these allegations are true, Obama must be removed from office immediately and tried for treason.”

And until the Conservatives convince Republicans at-large to nominate and elect candidates with a track-record of reducing the size and scope of the state/federal government, there is little hope of Conservative candidates winning a general election. The Conservatives have to come together around a philosophy and a leadership before taking on the Rats.
