Palin Goes After Media at GOP Dinner

(March 26) - Sarah Palin is teeing off on the media once again.

In a little-noticed speech to a GOP dinner in Alaska last week, Palin riffed for nearly an hour on a variety of topics — including her relationship with former McCain staffers, the Bush administration's anti-terror efforts, and actress Ashley Judd.

But the Alaska governor returned multiple times to the "unprecedented level of media slant" that she witnessed during her two-months on the Republican ticket with John McCain.

Her speech, delivered last Friday to the Anchorage Lincoln Day Dinner, was recorded by the Alaska Republican Party and posted online Tuesday.

Reflecting on the campaign, Palin said there were "a variety of reasons" Republicans lost in November, namely the faltering economy, but she seemed to place most of the blame on the press.

I disagree with your statement, Sarah was not much of a factor.

Sarah was a huge factor.

Wrong. Without Palin, McLoser gets crushed.

I agree. You are yet another agreeing with me and calling me wrong at the same time. The truth is he lost with Palin. That's the end of the argument right there. Palin helped bring the base. Without the base, McCain's loss would have been larger. Some would have stayed home (although I'm skeptical how many truly would have stayed home.) But in the end, McCain lost by a pretty good margin--with Palin. Hence, she was not a factor. He lost. He lost because he was an awful candidate.

As for bringing in money, McCain accepted public financing. Most of the money brought in didn't even fund the McCain campaign. It went to some GOP congressional fund. I read the small print. That's why I didn't contribute. It was a scam.

Without Sarah-McCain loses. With Sarah-McCain loses. So explain to me the hugeness?

The ONLY reason she turned people off is because she allowed the campaign to manipulate her into playing the media’s game. The things they did - the rumors, the attacks on her children, the rumors about the clothing... all the while lavishing largesse on “that man” like he was the next caesar. It was despicable.

Sarah is not perfect. Her family is not perfect. If she has to get the media’s approval to run, she will never make it. We have to remember Reagan - he turned the media’s attacks on him on their heads. He wouldn’t play their game.

He said “I PAID FOR THAT MICROPHONE.” I didn’t understand that at the time, I still don’t totally, but I think it represented a refusal to play by rules set by people who have no right to make the rules.

And one more thing — I believe the Office goes to the individuals with the brass ones to step up and take it.

Without Sarah Palin, he most certainly would not have gotten the campaign donation I sent.

Sad to say, it was very obvious what obama was and I would even check the box next to McCain's name on the ballot to keep obama out...and did. But McCain made that easier to do once he brought Sarah Palin on the ticket.

I voted for Sarah, not McCain.

The quantity of votes McCain got. She prevented a huge loss, and gave the Republicans a better leg to stand on and object, instead of fighting against a President who won with 60%+ of the vote, they’re fighting against a President who won with 52%.

Why John McCain was our candidate? The press.

I disagree. McCain was our candidate because of the primaries. Why? Because the socons went for Huckabee. The fiscal cons didn't like Huckabee so they went with Romney. The paleocons didn't like Romney or Huckabee so they went with Hunter. Oh yea, and there was some old guy named Thompson--a McCain supporter--who ran for a few months, just long enough to give McCain an edge over Huckabee.

In short, none of our choices, except maybe Hunter, were any good. And Hunter never got any support from anyone. No matter what choice we ended up with, it would have been a loser. You can't blame the media for that.

And by the way, nothing's changed. The GOP is devoid of leadership, and devoid of credibility.

He didn't get the donation you sent. By the time Sarah started pulling in bucks, McCain couldn't accept new funds. It all went to a GOP congressional fund, paid off legal fees, etc. It was a scam.

Look, even if she can’t make it to the Office, and given the way she’s been tarred and feathered that may be unlikley, it would be a big help to the movement if she could help take the BM complex down a few pegs.

Lord I hope I can see the day when all of the people in DC are hauled before committees and convicted of high crimes.

Why the GOP lost? John McCain.

Why John McCain was our candidate? The press.

Exactly! John McCain was chosen as the GOP candidate by the MSM a long time ago.

She prevented a huge loss

I agree she got the base fired up. It's debatable how many conservatives would have actually stayed home, faced with Obama as president. I don't know how to put a number on it. I'm skeptical about it. In the end, McCain lost pretty big WITH Sarah. Hence, she was not a factor. McCain lost. End of story.

Yeah, I guess I should have read the fine print like you did. Got a nifty little lapel pin, though. Yee haw.

She got beat by the media. She got beat by Couric. She got beat by Gibson. And she did a lousy job in the debate--again and again unable to answer the actual question, falling back on talking points.

It's not as if the media was fair to Reagan. As you say, Reagan fought back, and did so effectively. He demonstrated alpha male leadership. People like that in a leader (duh).

In the end, the Palin debate is pointless. She was the undercard. She was held back by virtue of being the 2nd name on the ticket. Did Reagan ever run for 2nd place? I don't think so. Had he been someone's veep pick, he would have been equally saddled. But he didn't run for 2nd banana.

The top of the ticket is the decisive factor. McCain was awful as a candidate. Awful in the debates. And he sealed his fate when he suspended his campaign and got on the wrong side of the bailout issue. After that, he was toast.

McCain showed Palin to the public as a high school flirt Barbie Doll with appropriate wardrobe and script. Some substantive speeches, such as on energy, would have been better. The media featured the wink rather than the wonk.

Reagan could talk over the press, but the press still hurt Reagan (the amiable dunce comment, Reagan napping during the Pope's talk, etc). If Palin is going to make it she needs to be able to connect with the average person and get her message over the din of the “lame stream media”. Sarah's story was buried under the ridicule of the press. I talked to a friend at work who said Palin was stupid etc. I asked her if she knew Palin cut the Governor’s budget, reform the Republican party in Alaska and sent REPUBLICANS to jail for corruption. This person had no idea, she remember Tina Fay and I can see Russia from my front porch, and Palin’s daughter being pregnant that's it!

The further we crash the freer we will be in the end. If we go all the way to cancelling elections, we’ll really be rebuilding from a blank slate, and can clean up the mess a lot better. If we keep going with these elections that are rigged with a wink and a nod, it’s going to be harder to clean house.

The thing to remember is that “that man’s” plans CANNOT work. They just can’t. Spending untold fractions of the worlds economy to prop up moribund consumption in this country while other countries starve flat out can not work.

I think it would be nice if you dropped the photos for a while, we can get over exposed to having to see them every time we go to a Palin thread and we have years yet to go.
