Specter trying to change rules to make GOP Senate race an open primary
hotair ^ | March 23, 2009

Via DrewM at Ace’s site. The last time I posted about this, I thought Specter could play Joe Lieberman to Pat Toomey’s Ned Lamont by losing the GOP primary and then winning the general election as an independent. Not so; turns out Pennsylvania law prohibits independent runs by candidates who compete in and lose a primary. So he’s either got to run as a Republican and beat Toomey or duck the showdown by going indie now.

Or maybe there’s a third way.

In recent days, Specter has quietly lobbied Republicans who control the state Senate to support a proposal that would allow independents to vote in the Republican or Democratic primary. He has called individual senators and spoke before the entire caucus - on that and other subjects - earlier this week.

One senator who attended the caucus said it was tough sell.

“It was apparent that he wanted the support” of the caucus, said Sen. John H. Eichelberger, R-Blair, who supports Toomey. “I could tell from the looks in the room and the comments that were made that there wasn’t much support for it.”

So brutal are the poll numbers for Specter among Pennsylvania Republicans that I can’t see how he stands a chance against Toomey, especially considering that plenty of disaffected centrist GOPers have doubtless left the party over the past few years

Q: Why doesn't Specter just run as a RAT? We all know he is, even his former employee Ed Rendell.

A: He wants to give Oba Mao bipartisan coverage.

He must be a dem. When you can’t win by the rules, change ‘em or cheat.

all states need to get out of the open primary business.

Democrats select their candidate

Republicans select their candidate

Independents by the very nature of their registration have no candidate.

Proof Positive that Open primaries are the death of the GOP. It is what gave us McCain last year.

Close the GOP primaries and move Texas and South Carolina to the front of the line. That will prevent RINO nominees from ever dragging the ticket to defeat again!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this what gave us McPain in the last election?

I’ve been saying the same thing about these stupid primaries. Move the strongly republican states to the front and flush out the RINOs.

Good idea. The open primary has to go, and I think a one day primary idea has some merit, although sometimes, the lengthy process allows nutbags to be found out and disposed of early enough in the process so as to not gum up the works for the general.

South Carolina is at the front of the line and they are the ones most resposible for sticking us with McCain.

And all primaries should be on the same day accross the country.

This wouldn't be fair to unknown conservative candidates. The primaries should be closed but should begin in the least populated red states so that unknown conservative candidates have a more level playing field with well financed (and more liberal) RINO candidates.

If I had my way, I would order the primaries with the smallest (in population) reddest states going first. For example, Wyoming would most likely be first on my calendar. After a month or so of small state primaries I would have all of the big red states (Texas, Georgia, etc.) going on a single Super Tuesday. If there's no winner after that, I'd have all the big blue states do another Super Tuesday, and the small blue states would go dead last.

Any state that did not have a closed primary would lose half of its delegate count to the states which have closed primaries, and any state that went out of order would lose half of its remaining delegate count. Under either circumstance, states would stand to lose 3/4 of their delegates to the other states which follow the plan.

I guess I could go back to dreaming now, right?

SC also had an open primary.

Toomey should run on the Constitution Party. The GOP will stab him in the back even if he wins the primary, they'll withhold funds or run a younger RINO in the primary or something. I bet Steele and the RNC brass will beg conservatives to support Specter because of "judges" or some crap.

GOP is broken ya'll....they're just as corrupt as the Dems.

I’ll just bet he is. He should have gone down in flames the last time. Instead, Bush went to PA and campaigned for him and he hung on. His day is over. He is a sick man and ought to have the decency to retire. I can’t believe he is even now scheming to keep his Senate seat. Any Republican who votes for him is by definition a RINO.
