Americans line the streets for their heroes as well.

I don't doubt that they would. Given the chance.

Obama just lifted the ban on photos at Dover. And there is opposition.

I've seen the Highway of Heroes on CBC, CTV and Utube. I stood on a bridge at Belleville. It affects you deeply.

Correct, the article he was making fun of (Canadian military taking a year break), was March 9th.

The show was the 17th.

The soldiers were killed on the 20th.

The libs don't want an apology, they just wanted to smear, as usual.

Weak on defence Ottawa CitizenMarch 16, 2009Comments (6) Canada's military leaders have never been in the habit of using scare tactics to press for bigger budgets -- a strategy that many police chiefs, by the way, have turned into an art form. http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Weak+defence/1393759/story.html

Correct, the above article from the 9th and 16th was what the show segment was about.

They were in no way mocking the recent deaths, as the libs have been saying for weeks now, this is the lie that is all over the net.

Oops, forgot to post the actual clip from the show:

http://hotair.com/archives/2009/03/23/canadian-defense-minister-to-greg-gutfeld-and-fox-news-apologize/

In which a YouTube grassroots brushfire explodes into a full-blown international incident. You make the call: Below you’ll find the “Red Eye” segment that aired on March 17 followed by MacKay’s demand for an apology this morning. Four Canadian troops were killed in Afghanistan in the interim, something that I suspect would have steered Gutfeld away from this topic if it had happened before the taping. Even so, the only really objectionable line is Doug Benson joking that he didn’t know Canada was part of the fight. Otherwise it’s standard goofs about Canadians being softer/more polite than Americans blended with a critique of foreign governments neglecting military spending. It’s not a knock on Canadian troops, in other words; on the contrary, Gutfeld explicitly agrees with one panelist who says near the end that he has “tremendous respect for anyone who serves,” whether Canadian or American.

The ratio of Canadians in the military to its population is about the same as ours.

Since they are a smaller country shouldn't their ratio be much higher?

Isn't our active military about 22 times larger than theirs?

Our population is about 10 times the size of theirs, and so is our military strength, approximately (re. total personnel count).

That’s counting only regulars, BTW. Triple that for reserve components for both.

No.

Canada needs its military for continental defence, civil emergencies, NATO obligations, peacekeeping and suppression of terrorism, same as the US.

Like the US, and unlike those small natioons with large standing armies, Canada has a population that respects the rule of law so it does not need to keep a standing army to keep its population in check.

But as the US is the preeminent world super power it also needs major force projection capability to serve that capacity. We live in a Pax Americana world.

In old fashioned terms, the US bears all of the Imperatives of Empire, just as Pax Britannica once did and just as Pax Romana once did.

Canada is not a world super power and has no ambition so to be.

What I come up with is that our population is about 9 times larger and our active duty about 22 times larger, that means your earlier statement about proportion is way off.

That was a lot of words that basically said yeah, tiny, undersized, underfunded, unsupported, military that needs a breather for a year, carry on dudes.

Their tiny number of guys that serve in their tiny military are used to portray Canada as some kind of warrior nation but in reality Texas supplies a great number more military recruits annually than the entire nation of Canada does.

This conservative American TV show was mocking the Canadian support for the military and it was accurate (and funny), but as usual Canadians hold up the the small number of their actual soldiers as cover for their lack of national will and martial spirit.

It is nice having foreigners at FR but the Americans here have a lot to do related to the stated goals of this site in relation to American politics and the beating that freepers are having to suffer for a valid statement on a late night conservative, humorous news/comedy show on our favorite network is out of control, there are many threads on FR on this segment that are posted by foreigners touting the same thing, the valor of a handful of Canadian soldiers (the entire active military is 65,000) and a sniper shot as refutation of everything that conservatives dislike about arrogant, leftwing, Canadian politics.

France, Mexico, Canada, Norway, Germany, Britainstan, at times American conservatism has something to say about all of them and many other foreign countries, a one year military stand down is a big deal.

Doesn’t anyone here remember the 15 British sailors that were captured and the mocking Britain took for that here at FR?

Maybe the Canadian Gov shouldn't be worried about a US comedy show, and worry about how to purchase some MRAPs.

http://www.thestar.com/News/Canada/article/606084

The Americans have come up with the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) fleet of vehicles that are both massive, weighing up to 22-tonnes, and expensive – they cost $750,000 each. But they did achieve their goal of dramatically cutting deaths related to roadside bombs in Iraq, where the IED tactic was honed before being exported to Afghanistan.

“By the time the U.S. programs began ramping up it was obvious that the (Canadian Forces’) lead in blast-resistant vehicles was going to be a one-time thing,” said Priestley.

General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada presented the Canadian Forces with a prototype replacement for the LAV III last year, though a DND spokesperson said there is “no planned or programmed LAV III replacement project” – only plans to refurbish the existing carrier.

The prototype, known as the LAV-H – the “H” stands for high capacity – would give Canadian soldiers a vehicle with a rounded hull, stronger suspension and extra armour. But it weighs in at about 25 tonnes, and that could be a complication in Afghanistan.

The LAV-H was built based on the feedback from Canadian troops returning from Afghanistan, and the possibility of a purchase is “still working its way up through the DND bureaucracy,” said Peter Keating, a company spokesperson.

It sounds to me as though Canada needs some Canadian freepers to move their indignation back across the border against the government and people's of their own country.

The fact is that until the Canadian voter starts pressuring that government instead of squelching any criticism from foreigners aka conservative FOX humor show Redeye for all of about 4 minutes, then things will not improve.

"Tank-training at home has been hampered by the fact that 40 Leopard 2 tanks have been sitting in a Montreal warehouse awaiting refurbishment for the last two years, Leslie said. Until the government tenders the contract for their refurbishment, the army can't take possession of them to train future deployments to Afghanistan."

Nope, Canada is a lost cause....the gov is shutting down their Freepers for “hate speech”. They will remain Americahaters....while they continue to mooch off of our superior health care and military security. Oops, well until the messiah brings us down, reduces our power and financial abilities to help the world.

Canadian court orders release of forum dataposted at 8:36 am on March 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

A judge has ordered Free Dominion, the Canadian counterpart to Free Republic, to release the records of its anonymous forum posters in order to enable a lawsuit by Richard Warman. The release will mean the end of anonymity for all practical purposes in Canada, as well as an end to privacy for Free Dominion itself, which must also produce all its hosting agreements and ownership information as well. The judge offered this ironic justification for his order:
[33] In the case before the court, we are dealing with an anti-hate speech advocate and Defendants whose website is so controversial that it is blocked to employees of the Ontario Public Service.
