Legions of Pennsylvania Republicans and independents switched to vote Democratic in 2008, and GOP Sen. Arlen Specter needs them back.
Pennsylvania's longest-serving senator could be in for the political fight of his career in 2010. Mr. Specter faces primary challenges from the conservative wing of the Republican Party angered by his support of President Barack Obama's $787 billion stimulus package. Meanwhile, Democrats are gearing up for a general-election battle.
The more immediate problem for the 79-year-old senator is the April 2010 Republican primary, where he is expected to face at least three opponents. Only those registered as Republicans can vote in the primary, and it is a more conservative electorate after 239,000 Republicans and independents switched affiliations last year to vote in the Democratic presidential primary between Hillary Clinton and Mr. Obama.

Operation Chaos!
I read that the guy votes with the Dems 60% of the time.
There should be a rule automatically changing party affiliation once you cross the 50% line.
Smoochy must die!
If the primary opposition is split three ways he’ll still manage to get re-nominated.
He’s nearly 80 years old and a liberal traitor! For those two reasons alone, the PA Republican Party needs to dump this spineless old goat and find a real conservative to run in 2010. If Lord Hussein Obama keeps screwing up royally, 2010 could be a good year for Conservatives.
Three conservatives plus one RINO in a primary = RINO win. Those three need to figure out amongst themselves who will step down and who will stay on the ballot. A RINO win is doubly certain if the Dems don't have a primary, since that will leave the Dems free to cross over.
When you have pressure from all sides it is proof positive you have a fence post squarely up your ass.
A non issue for a political person of either party who believes as their party believes IMHO.
ONE conservative should run against him....Pat Toomey! And Michael Steele better support the CONSERVATIVE.....NO MONEY TO Snarlin’Arlen!
Do a coin flip and pick one of them.
Better than Specter.
Remember how Hush refused to confront Specter???

Will Limbaugh now allow Toomey equal time on his show?

Arlen Specter on Rush

Sen. Sphincter is experiencing PRESSURE?
Everyone stand BACK! If that thing blows up you don’t want to get any on you!
Unfortunately, we have Peg Luksik, one of those one issue (anti-abortion) candidates, who has announced another Kamikazi attack on Specter. She has absolutely NO chance of winning, but could indeed keep Pat Toomey from winning. I was at a Lincoln Day Dinner in central PA Thursday night and Pat Toomey was the speaker, when he said, “I am very likely to run against Arlen Specter in 2010, the large crowd erupted into cheers and applause. I wish he would formally announce. Maybe he is trying to talk some sense into the tinfoil hat-wearing Luksik.
Benedict Arlen's office actually sent my wife the form to switch back. She did so in order to vote for Pat Toomey this year. I'll probably have to download my own form because I embarassed Arlen at the last town hall meeting in our area with an immigration question.
I do not see too many Rats crossing over to vote for The Spectre. They do not care him as the media makes it out. The only area where he is marginally popular is the southeast of Pennsylvania, mainly FILTH-adelphia republicans.
Someone should ask old Sphincter why he should stay?
Go Toomey!
I wonder how many of the “republicans” in the primary are nothing more than shills hoping to siphon off votes and thereby insure Specters nomination? Just a thought.
Toomey’s biggest road block is the union vote. The unions have bought and paid for Specter for years and with the card check legislation coming up, the unions are sure to be promising Specter the world, if he votes yes on card check. Specter is going to use card check as extortion against the Republicans. The Republicans will be damned if they do and damned if they don’t.
The most important thing about this is not the statement this will make about the need for conservatives in the GOP(there will be a lot of Bushies who will bend over again to get Specter relected so this does not happen), but the replacement of the GOP point man on judicial nominations review on committee.
The latter will need a person with spine who will challenge in every way possible Obama’s selections as he attempts to remake the judiciary the way he is doing to the executive.
