4 cops shot, suspect dead after Calif. traffic stop

Police say suspect behind two separate shootings involving officers

OAKLAND, Calif. - Four officers were in critical condition and a suspect dead on Saturday after gunfire at a traffic stop led to a massive manhunt that ended in a shootout, police said.

Two officers were shot in the first incident just after 1 p.m. after they stopped the suspect's vehicle in east Oakland, said Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason.

The suspect fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies.

Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland shut to traffic.

Roll this around in your mind...

Sounds good, and familiar, to me.

When I was almost 15, but most of my classmates were to be 14 for some time yet, a half dozen or so of us decided to go pheasant hunting one afternoon. We all had 12 or 20 gauge shotguns. We rode our bicycles, along a major thoroughfare, in a city of over 100,000 people, with SHOTGUNS ACROSS THE HANDLE BARS, mostly, but not all cased. And of course shells in our pockets.

No one as much as batted an eye.

When I was about your 10 or so, I would often ride out to my Great Uncle Sam's place (it was sooo cool having a real Uncle Sam), for some target practice, sometimes on pests, other times just paper and cans. By myself. Or I'd ride over to that cousin's place. I did get stopped by policeman on foot patrol once as went through the "business district", maybe I needed to buy more BBs, I don't recall, of what had once been a town of it's own. He asked where I was going and what I was doing. When I told him, he said, OK, be careful. Today, or less than a year ago actually, a kid in that same town, although not so near the edge, got suspended from school for showing friends a non working BB gun, well off of school grounds.

That’s generous, thanks.

BTW, thanks also for your Service. Viet Nam vets have always been my heroes.

A BB gun was barely adequate....but it did force me to learn tactics and strategy....

At 12, my friend's dad's shotgun shells were a source of pellets,. Cherry bomb dipped in glue then placed in a bowl of bird shot.

Later, whamo slingshot, friend with match to ignite fuze, and let go the pouch.

Launch projectile for airburst at the huge bunch of crows perched on the large dead uke tree. Wonder we didn't blow ourselves up. Lots of feathers in the air, 10 cents a head paid by the farmer.

The evening crow returning from the fields would literally blacken the sky. haven't seen that many since.

IS THAT IT???

We really do need to get this yanked. Everyone ought to be flagging this.

I’ve watched it end-to-end, and it isn’t merely “hate speech”, IMO it goes awfully close to “uttering a threat” or “inciting others to commit a felony”.

I do not know if these are crimes in America: they certainly are in most countries.

(Grin!) I had one of those! I wanted a Red Ryder tho’.

Had them in Kiwi Land too? Wow, who knew? (as my lawyer daughter would say. :) )

I embedded one of those Daisy BBs into the temple of an older cousin at our grandmother's farm. Cold day, full house, so we were sitting in the car out in the yard. Decided to see if I could clip off a leaf from the tree we were parked near. I missed the leaf's stem, and the BB bounced off the tree and came back to hit my cousin, fortunately it was pretty much spent by then. :) (he was in the driver's seat, I was in back of him, in a 4 door '53 Pontiac. Green with white top).

Is this a picture of the guy?

Found this on Craigslist (SF Bay Area), supposedly it's him.

No, I’m Canadian by birth. Being a Kiwi is something I did later in life.

Whoa! That’s wild! I only shot my younger brother in the arse once: thru a pair of Levi jeans. It left a very small, perfectly circular tidy black bruise.

Mom confiscated my BB-gun for a while...
