Guess what Murtha has been given by the Navy!

Honored with Public Service Award, bloggers erupt in outrage

The U.S. Navy awarded U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., its Distinguished Public Service Award, triggering an Internet campaign to have Navy Secretary Donald C. Winter withdraw it.

Murtha, who publicly accused U.S. Marines of cold-blooded murder in a firefight in Haditha, Iraq, and was caught on camera in the Abscam scandal appearing to negotiate a bribe, was honored by the Navy for his "selfless devotion to the Nation's Sailors and Marines."

The award credits him with making sure the military services "were provided the resources necessary to effectively conduct the Global War on Terrorism."

"His courageous leadership, vision, and loyalty to the men and women of the Department of the Navy greatly contributed to their quality of life and helped create the most modern and highly trained fighting force in history," the honor said.

Through shocking behind-the-scenes stories, Sen. Tom Coburn documents what you already suspect – elected representatives put politics and their own reelection bids ahead of principles. "Breach of Trust" names names from both parties.

It continued, "As Chairman of Subcommittee on Defense of the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Murtha's tireless advocacy helped maintain the Navy and Marine Corps team at the highest levels of combat readiness to meet the challenges of the 21st century."

An online petition that appeared almost immediately already has collected more than 11,500 signatures.

It was set up by Gabe Ledeen of VetsForFreedom.org.

Don’t look.

Very funny, Cal. You know how to rope me in! LOL!

Thank you all for the pings. Of course my stomach has been churning since I read it yesterday. One of "my guys" called and I told him about this. I've e-mailed him the petitiion link and he will forward it to his military friends.

I take issue with these 2 lines and have taken the liberty of correcting the questionable wording here:
Congressman John Murtha should apologize for slandering the Marines of 3/1, and for undermining the efforts of those servicemen and women who fought in Iraq.
If he does not, t The Secretary of the Navy should rescind this award as a sign of his unwavering support for those who served in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

We have discussed the "apology" thing at length. Three years after the fact is silly to even consider. We all know it would be nothing but an "I apologize if I offended you" kind of thing.

The so-called award should be rescinded, with or without an apology, as it should have never been given to begin with, IMO.

There is also the fact that Winter authorized somewhere around 70 NCIS agents to investigate ...

Not only that, one of Murtha's staffers, Gabrielle Carruth, is a 17 year Navy vet where she was a NCIS agent. She met her husband, who is a NCIS agent during training.

Creates a nice little 5 degrees of separation thingy:

Murtha >> Gabrielle Carruth >> Mr. Carruth, NCIS Agent >> NCIS investigates Haditha >> Winter, SecNav - heads NCIS >> Murtha

Hiya, Justa!

Excellent point on Gabrielle Carruth. Her name seems a little familiar to me so I must have read it but forgot it and it's something I definitely shouldn't have forgotten.

On your previous post:

You are exactly right, he should have never received it in the first place. Donald Winter slapped every veteran and especially Marines in the face when he awarded that to Fat Jack, it was despicable!

Her name seems a little familiar to me so I must have read it but forgot it...

We began looking into her way back when. I had to fire up another computer to find the file that I knew existed. The last date I did anything in that file was 12-2-07. Smooth may remember more as we discussed the Winter-Murtha connection the last time I visited and began researching.

Gabrielle joined Murtha's staff in December 2001 following a one-year DoD fellowship from Georgetown Univ. She was a "special" NCIS agent examining ... (now get this!)
sexual assaults and white-collar crime.

Always good to have a specialist with connections on your team when the white-collar crime investigations begin!
Was not Murtha one that was always yammering about stressed out soldiers beating on their wives? I've long believed Gabrielle was the connection between Murtha and Winter.

At the time I was trying to find out if her husband was one of the NCIS agents assigned to the Haditha Marines, but was unable to find anything at the time.

“One of the highest points of my career was winning back the Democratic majority [in November],”Carruth says. “And [last May] Representative Murtha was honored with the Profile in Courage Award for his brave stance on the [Iraq] war.” The congressman, who spent thirty-seven years with the U.S. Marines, retiring in 1990 as a colonel from the Marine Corps Reserve, has been a vocal opponent of the Bush administration’s war efforts.

Carruth joined the congressman’s staff in December 2001, following a one-year U.S. Department of Defense fellowship from Georgetown University. Her credentials included a seventeen-year stint with the Navy, working in far-flung spots—Jacksonville, San Diego, Okinawa—as a special Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) agent, examining sexual assaults and white-collar crime.

In fact, Carruth met her husband, who is also an NCIS agent, at federal law-enforcement training in Glencoe, Georgia. He was her machine-gun instructor. Today, the couple has three children.

This is possibly the husband.... NCIS SA Carruth (202)433-9254, DSN 288-9254, TCCarruth@NCIS.Navy.Mil

Thanks to you both. Your posts brought back some of my terrible memory about her. It’s a little hard to believe our government has people like her working in investigative capacities when they have such an outspoken political leftist bent, I suppose that’s why people like Murtha are able to get away with their criminal activities year after year!

I've always wondered about her and NCIS dirty tricks, but it's probably not something that can ever be pinned down.

Yep, it’s really something picking up over 11,000 signatures since Friday, there are a whole lot of people that don’t care for Fat Jack!
