It's about 250 miles away, but Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White says the drug war in Juarez, Mexico is spilling over to the Albuquerque-area. He says his deputies are dealing with a spike in drugs, and he says that the drug cartels are behind at least one murder in town.
Deputies say 53-year-old Danny Baca was shot more than 20 times out on the West Mesa before his body was burned. Authorities believe it was all a result of Baca double-crossing one of the Mexican cartels in Juarez, Investigators say Baca took a load of marijuana to Albuquerque instead of dropping it off in El Paso.
Sheriff White says that is just one of many examples of how the surge in violence across the border has spilled over to the Albuquerque-area.
"Right now, believe me, I'm not pleased, and i'm not going to sit here and paint some rosy picture because it's just not there. There is a high amount of violence in our city and our state, and much of it has to do with drugs and that is directly connected to the cartels," White said.
White calls it an endless, frustrating problem for law enforcement.
"We're not seeing a reduction in the amount of drugs that are coming in, we're seeing more," White said.
White says drug runners are being busted on a weekly basis on Albuquerque highways.
Earlier this year, a man in Rio Rancho was arrested, along with 11 others, for dealing meth. White says the man was directly linked to the Mexican cartels.
We're dealing with a very large problem and, unfortunately, we share that border and we are going to see some of that collateral damage, regrettably, and unfortunately, it's blood that's shed because of it," White said.
White says Albuquerque is not the only U.S. city feeling the effects of the drug war. He says right now, the city with the largest number of drug-related kidnappings, second only to Mexico City, is Phoenix.

Hopefully, the cops will be able to take a breather and regroup while America stops to celebrate the Cinco De Mayo holiday.
The Drug Warriors wanted a war - and they’re getting one. I hope they’re happy, because I’m not. (And some other people like Ismael Mena and Donald Scott aren’t happy either, because they’re dead, killed by the Drug Warriors.)
But then again what is other than the call to pray to Obama 5 times a day...
DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING!
NO more calls, please.
We have a winner!

The only Americans that Celebrate Cinco De Mayo are stupid sheep humans that got sucked up into a foreign holiday, giving these morons another excuse to have another party and get drunk.
While our last president celebrated Cinco De Mayo up in the White House, dancing in a conga-line with his Mexican friends in the White House ball room, millions that entered this country illegally, marched on our cities, making their demands and threats.
It's like watching some sick, twisted Hollywood movie.
No doubt the new Puppet in Chief will celebrate his own Cinco De Mayo, by hanging pinatas from the White House chandeliers, and calling for new paid holiday for federal employees.
Is there anyone left out there that wonders how this country has become so incredibly f'd up?
Sounds like St. Patrick's Day (when I toast King Billy) to me...
Good thinking. A perfect analogy! All Presidents and most Americans have always celebrated Cinco De Mayo...
:o
Just another drunken holiday for Paddy-whackers, aka Mexicans turned inside out. ;-)
Long live Cromwell and the New Model Army. :)
My son's new $65K truck was stolen in Albuquerque, by men from a drug cartel out of chihuahua, Mexico. A deputy from another city saw the APB come across his screen about the truck and later he saw them, so he gave chase.
He pulled them over after calling for back up and when he walked up to the driver's side, they shot him. Fortunately he had a bullet proof vest on and wasn't hurt too bad. They took off when the deputy went down and they were going so fast that when they came to the first turn, they couldn't negotiate it and ran off in a ditch. The truck high centered so they got out and ran, but the K-9 dogs tracked them down and the police took them into custody. My son was lucky he got his truck back before they made it back across the border.
What a perfect analogy! It truly rationalizes why most all Americans should be Celebrating Cinco De Mayo.
Great point!
