SARAH Palin's teenage Bristol has broken off her engagement to Levi Johnston two months after the birth of their child.
The 18-year-old daughter of the Alaskan Governor told the Associated Press (AP) she was "devastated" by the split.
"Unfortunately, my family has seen many people say and do many things to 'cash in' on the Palin name," she said in a statement.
"Sometimes that greed clouds good judgment and the truth."
Mr Johnston, 19, told AP the pair had mutually decided to end their relationship.
Bristol Palin's pregnancy was announced last summer days after her mother was named John McCain's running mate on the Republican presidential ticket.

Years ago most men felt the responsibility to marry in such situations and did. Not today. As a society we need to reverse the current trend and again raise responsible men and women. It depended. Were the man and the women members of "polite society"? Or were they "fallen" from the start?
The edges of society have always been frayed. What's happened recently is that the middle has become undone as well. There's no consistent culture or morality being passed down between generations, partly from the hippies breaking the social contract in the 60's and American business breaking the social contract(welfare capitalism) in the 70's. This has led to a culture of gratification and anxiety even among the people that should know better(the professional/middle classes).
Wish I knew an easy solution, but I don't.
Good point. What about Britney Spears sister? Did she marry? Are they stillk together?
I have a hunch that Todd and Sarah Palin are going to be parents-in-all-but-name for this child.
Notice I said MOST. : )
Ann Coulter's last book was a beginning. It would be great if more books engendered such discussions. As conservatives we might have been happier if the women on the view had been more receptive. BUT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT IT, which is amazing in itself. I bet it planted a few seeds in the listening audience as well.
If people realized how much of their taxes go toward unmarried women with children, and the cost to society in human terms such as lost potential, productivity, and intact families, as well as the financial cost of catching and housing criminals, they might quickly jump on Ann's bandwagon.
Prayer would also help.
Hmmmm... Has Levi sold out to the msm vermin?
I was thinking the same. I wonder if all this has anything to do with the reason Sarah may not run in 2012?
Can't tell you how many discussions we've had about that topic.
“Young women need to keep their legs crossed.”
True, and young men need to keep their pants on.
you got that right.
I think every father who believes a young man should marry the girl he impregnates -
needs to teach both his sons and his daughters that that’s the way it needs to be -
from birth, pretty much.
That means running a lot of interference on the school system’s moral relativism, tv, movies, and MUSIC. Nothing is cooler these days that being a pimp daddy whatever with a baby on every block.
It also means highlighting positive examples, whether celebrity or personal.
It also means going to church and living that consistent Christian life.
Well said, Marie! : )
Can't tell you how many discussions we've had about that topic.Hah... well, if anything good comes out of the depression, I hope it forces people to actually behave themselves and cooperate again.
Hello? Did she get pregnant all by herself? Couldn’t the guy keep his own pants on? Good grief!
Trollop? How can some of you people be so catty?
Meeooooww..
I like that response Marie! Both sexes need to learn self control! : )
The only problem with the above, (and yes, I do agree with you very much!)is that there are a few people who seem to be “conservatives” on these threads, who are putting Bristol down. They are saying she should’ve “kept her legs closed”, calling her a “trollop” (which is the same as a “whore”, incidentally) etc... and that’s disgusting! And oh yes, condemning her mother and father for her being in that position!
I don’t know what to say about these people, or to them. They may be conservatives, but they certainly are not compassionate! Seems to me that a man said long ago “Let those with the least sin cast the first stone.” I think they forgot about that. They need to be reminded of that, if they ever read it in the first place!
I sure hope these people are with the “least sin” category; otherwise, I’d say they are hypocrites! These insinuations are some of the nastiest and most cruel as I’ve ever heard!
I actually hold the boys a little more accountable than the girls. I have sons AND daughters, so I don’t think I have a prejudice.
From personal experience, and observation, it seems to me that the boys push to “go all the way” a lot more often and insistently than the girls do. Of course, that’s not always the case, and of course, the girls should say no.
What say the FReeper dudes and FReeperettes? Is it usually the male or usually the female pushing things along physically?
Luckily there is a large supportive family.

In the teens & early 20s, everything I’ve seen with our kids & in my own life is the boys pushing it. To the point of breaking up with girls who won’t go along. But I do know of an instance where the girl was in her early 20s, wanted to push it, too, but refused to use birth control b/c she is Baptist & believed it was against her religion. Or perhaps she wanted the result, which was, voila, a pregnancy & shotgun wedding. She then reverted to being very holier-than-thou towards the world.
Is Bristol working? Or is she just being a total slug.
