Conservative Peg Luksik to challenge Arlen Specter

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A conservative activist who ran for Pennsylvania governor three times in the 1990s says she will challenge Arlen Specter for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate next year.

Peg Luksik, of Johnstown, said Tuesday she is not deterred by the prospective candidacy of former congressman Pat Toomey. Toomey, a fellow conservative who narrowly lost to Specter in the 2004 primary, says he is considering running in 2010.

Luksik says Toomey told her last month that he wouldn't challenge Specter. She says it's up to Toomey to decide whether he wants to risk dividing the GOP's conservative wing and allowing Specter to win a sixth term.

That may be true, unless of course he told her he wasn’t running.

Luksik's unelectable. She's got some grassroots support because years ago she ran well against pro-abort Barbara Hafer in a gubernatorial primary. I voted for her then, but she's way way too far right to be a legitimate threat to anybody. She'll have to drop out if Pat Toomey gets in.

I still maintain though that Toomey can't run because his financial backers are hurting in this economy.

Lynn Swann is our best bet to beat Specter.

Peg and Pat need to sit down and decide who’s going to challenge Specter and who’s going to take a seat this time. The important thing is defeating Specter, and that will take a united Conservative movement. Enough of this vote splitting garbage.

Unless this is a lie, it is Toomey who should stay out. If it is a lie, she needs to step down for being a liar.

Peg's as honest as the day is long. She'll lose, but she's honest.

What about Lynn Swann?

At this early a date, someone is allowed to change their mind. It would be a different story if he just jumped in at the last minute after denying he’d run.

Remember Outcome Based Education from the 1990’s? It was Luksik who was outspoken about this and other educational issues. If I recall, she gave many speeches back then.

Just to be clear (your post did not), Peg Luksik was outspoken AGAINST outcome-based education.

Here is part of Peg's profile:

Mrs. Luksik is the author, with Pamela Hobbs Hoffecker, of Outcome-Based Education: The State's Assault on our Children's Values. She has also written a book about being a parent, called Love, Mom.

Swann won’t run.

Why not?

If that is true, then Toomey isn’t nearly as conservative as everyone thinks.

We’ll see how it plays out. What is Pat’s position on amnesty. If he’s for it, he can kiss off.

Sounds like it to me, but I haven't done that much research on the matter.

Peg Luksik is from Johnstown, so she could challenge Jack Murtha instead. Certainly a more winnable race for her than trying to beat out both Toomey and Specter in a statewide primary.

I like that idea, I’m sickened how easily he won last time.

McCain narrowly took his seat I believe.

We can’t have Luksik letting Specter win with a plurality.

Are you still living in Tennessee, or is your homepage flag for some other purpose?

In any event, I do find Toomey's apparent decision unfortunate. Conervatives in PA would be better served by not having two of their standard bearers butting heads in a primary.

Toomey knows Luksik has already all but officially announced her campaign. His decision, if true, is counterproductive and appears opportunistic. Pat Toomey is better than that, IMO.

Your contention That "For us expecting a solid field assembled this early is a bit ridiculous" makes me wonder who you think "us" is.

Now is the time to organize the effort and work toward putting a united ticket in place. Now is not the time to be pitting our favorites against each other.

I didn't know who Swann was.

Not a sports nut.

*slaps forehead*

Seems I took a Swann dive...
