George Galloway stoned in Egypt
TimesOnline (Times of London) ^ | 3/9/09 | Ann Barrowclough

A humanitarian convoy led by maverick MP George Galloway carrying medical supplies for Gaza has come under attack in Egypt

The convoy, carrying aid worth £1 million, was pelted with stones and vandalised after it stopped in El-Arish, a small town around 28 miles from the Rafah border crossing with Gaza.

"It's an absolute disgrace,'' convoy organiser Yvonne Ridley told AFP. "The power was cut. Under cover of darkness members of our convoy were attacked with stones.

"Vandals also wrote dirty words and anti-Hamas slogans,'' she said. "Several people in the convoy were injured in the attack."

"George Galloway is still in negotiations," said Ms Ridley. "What we have agreed to do is to separate the medical aid from the non-medical aid. The non-medical will go into Gaza via the Egyptian Red Crescent."

The convoy is expected to continue to Gaza today.

In early February, it was alleged that three Islamist terror suspects arrested in northwest England had planned to leave the country under cover of Mr Galloway's convoy. Intelligence sources said that the men were planning a terrorist operation abroad.

It is when it’s George Galloway you’re talking about.
Egypt is primarily pro-Israel, anti-Hamas, believe it or not.

That last bit, about he suspected terrorists planning to use the convoy to leave the UK, was interesting. Maybe that is one of the reasons for the hostile reception. They already have enough of those, without importing them from Merry Ol’ England...

I did not know about anti-Hamas sentiment in Egypt. This is a good thing.

Of course, it is pretty easy to be anti-Hamas. A pretty low bar to clear. Yet somehow Galloway and his ilk fail to do so...

Not pro-Israel, anti Iran. Hamas is Iran’s baby.

maverick MP George Galloway

Kind of a reminder what being a maverick means.

Isn’t Galloway the jerk who came over here and showed us what a wuss he was, bad mouthing the Bush Administration and what we were doing in Iraq. Generally siding with the enemy on every point of doctrine.

I just noticed your typo in the headline.
When oh when is FR going to enter the 21st century and enable post editing?
I know FR is conservative and resists “Change” but this is getting ridiculous.

Keep in mind, Egypt was the first arab country to recognize Israel and its right to exist.

Galloway’s entire career has been based on treason.

What the hell? He was planning on facilitating the travel of terrorists with plans to attack the West (probably the US) and he’s still in the UK government. What the hell?

Apparently the English have the same problem we do with a significant portion of the voting public unable to deal with truth and reality.

Egypt’s entire economy is based on Western tourism. Every time there is a terrorist attack in the west, or violence flairs up in the middle east, Egypt’s economy suffers greatly. Tourism comes to a grinding halt as people cancel their trips. So both the government and the people are heavily invested in combating terrorism and have a very tangible interest in curbing islamic extremism.

"anti-Hamas slogans"

Turn Gaza over to the Egyptians.
