2 British soldiers killed in N. Ireland gun ambush
Associated Press ^ | March 8, 2009 | SHAWN POGATCHNIK

Suspected IRA dissidents opened fire on British troops and pizza delivery men outside a Northern Ireland army base, killing two soldiers and wounding four other people. Police said Sunday the attackers fired on their victims again as they lay wounded on the ground.

Saturday night's attack at the entrance to Massereene army barracks in Antrim, west of Belfast, was the first killing of British troops in Northern Ireland since 1997. Its callousness, in targeting soldiers and civilians alike, appeared calculated to inflame community tensions and undermine Northern Ireland's Catholic-Protestant administration.

"The whole country is shocked and outraged at the evil and cowardly attack," British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said in London. "I assure you that we will bring these murderers to justice. No murderer will be able to derail a peace process that has the support of the people of Northern Ireland."

In Dublin, the Irish government said virtually nobody in either part of Ireland wanted to rekindle a conflict that left more than 3,700 dead. Leaders pledged greater security cooperation with British security forces in the north to catch and imprison the dissidents, who are strongest along the Irish border.

"Violence has been utterly rejected by the people of this island, both north and south," said Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen. "A tiny group of evil people cannot, and will not, undermine the will of the people of Ireland to live in peace together. "

Police Chief Superintendent Derek Williamson, who is leading the hunt for the killers, said two men armed with assault rifles both opened fire from a car on a group of four soldiers taking delivery of food from two Domino's Pizza drivers. He said it wasn't clear whether all six were hit at that point,

Okay, I know you had other good points in your post, but this just made me laugh:

The steak dinner at the restaurant in the Europa didn't help either. I don't think I had a worse piece of meat my whole trip. It was supposed to be rib-eye, done medium, but it was practically charred and dry as a popcorn fart.

They really have a way of killing a good piece of meat over there. I've learned to eat a lot of things with gravy, especially when my MIL has is cooking.

But yeah, it's unfortunate that you got such a one sided tour guide. I always recommend that anyone that goes over to Belfast do a Black Taxi Tour. Those will take you through both sides of town. You'll definitely see murals - Republican and Loyalist - but you won't really be able to tell which side your taxi driver sympathizes with and you'll be shown them more as a history lesson than political propaganda.

To me, despite these killings - which I feel very confident a vast majority of the Catholic/Nationalist population does not support - N. Ireland, and particularly Belfast are still very safe, wonderful places to visit.

I hope the Real IRA are not successful in derailing the accomplishments that have been made in recent years. It would be tragic to start taking steps backwards.

That is a load of crap. No native born Irishman would ever even think of being british..... gag me.

I know many "native born" Irish from the North who will always consider themselves Irish, but are very happy with Ulster staying a part of the UK.

And I know even more Irish in the south who are very happy not having Ulster rejoin them.

But I'm guessing you are quite sympathetic with the cause so you choose to believe what you want to believe.

Why don’t you ask that of the people who live in Northern Ireland? Most of them are Unionists. If it wasn’t for the power-sharing agreement, the Nationalist/Republican political representatives wouldn’t ever win enough seats in Stormont to form a majority, and would never see power. Which is kind of how the troubles started in the first place....

As the tyrant leaders of the UK kill what is left of that country via Muslims, over taxation, and out of control socialism the true people of freedom will do what it takes to return their liberty and freedom. Just as all free men have done throughout history.

My point is and remains that they don’t know who did this and I mentioned it just may be the first shots fired to throw of the chains of socialism.

Were the people who recently rioted over unjust communist rule terrorists?

Were the men at Lexington and Concord terrorists?

If and when Obama orders troops to fire on conservatives at an anti-tax rally and they return fire, will they be terrorists.

Britain is a friend of America, but she is enslaving and destroying freedom from within.

Just as we here are going to feel the ever tightening grip of the fascists here in our own country.

So if and when free men stand up to resist the tyrants, will you call then terrorists too?

There is one thing the left truely fear, God and God’s people. They know that people who love God can overcome all odds.

The whole world is watching us to see if we will go quitely in to this long dark night. Or if we take our would be masters to task for thus vain attempt to enslave a free people and harness our labor to set up a world-wide socialist order.

Hitler won WWII we are becoming a fascist nation. They are the cult of personality.

Why is the comparison so horrible? Both countries have acquired territories through violence, underhandedness and imperialism, and regardless of the wrongs that were committed in acquiring those territories, the majority of people now living there are quite happy being part of the nation that has sovereignty over the land they live on...

If you think the RIRA gangsters who did this are freedom fighters, you are sadly deluded. These are the scumbags who were behind the Omagh bombing, which was targeted at civilians and deliberately funnelled them towards the bomb site in order to maximise the slaughter. Even Gerry and Co were forced to condemn it.

And the ‘Real’ IRA has basically the same agenda as the Socialist PIRA, except the RIRA was formed by Provos who were not willing to take part in a peace process...

I could handle the English breakfasts because they were mostly buffet, but our supper meals were set choices, and since I don’t eat fish, or lamb, my choice were basically beef, chicken or pork. Here I thought I’d get to have some corned beef and cabbage once I got to Ireland, and never saw it on a menu. I figured it must be something the Irish picked up when they came to America. The best meal I had on my trip was a sandwich I bought at a farmer’s market in Salisbury. It was pulled pork on a roll with stuffing.

“seriously, Britain doesn’t belong in N. Ireland.”

You know, I expect to find terrorist sympathisers in DUmmy world, but finding them here on FR has put a downer on my day.

How would you react if two US troops (just about to go to Afghanistan) had just been shot by terrorists in the area concerned and I posted something like:

“seriously, the US doesn’t belong in New Mexico” (or Hawaii or Alaska or wherever else the US might have started having soveriegnty over a few hundred years after we had soverignty in Northern Ireland.

Think about it. Then hold your head in shame.

Adding to the list of “terrotist” factions in Ireland are the INLA (Irish National Liberation Army). Reports out of Ireland are suggesting that the INLA are closely linked to a Drug Lord, thought to control the bulk of the drug trade in Dublin — and probably Ireland — with the help of the quasi-Marxist terror group, the Irish National Liberation Army.

Don’t think for a moment that these splinter IRA groups are in any way Freedom Fighters or part of the Old guard from 1916. They are murderers, gangsters and thugs.

Ahhhh, the famous Europa Hotel, known as the most bombed hotel in all of Europe. Never been into Belfast city center but the surrounding areas and rest of N. Ireland have the best towns and scenery to rival the South - this coming from a Connaght native.

If you read the story and my posts you will learn that they don’t know “WHO” did this attack. It was a guess, just like Bill Clinton’s guess that Rush was the cause of the Oklahoma City bombing.

Well heck, I can make a WAG (wild ass guess) myself. And my WAG is in what I posted.

Yes, the RIRA and the IRA are terrorists. But I didn’t say I think they did this, I MADE UP, WHO I thought did it.

Wonder what the “peace maker” and phony “Irishman” George Mitchell will have to say about this.

“Which is kind of how the troubles started in the first place....”

The troubles started when the Brits invaded Ireland centuries ago. There has been strife ever since then.
They are only now beginning to settle down due to people of good will on both sides.

It’s already been reported that the RIRA has claimed responsibility using a recognised code word to an Irish Newspaper:

Like I said. Socialists. Not that they need an extra epithet to add to the murdering scum that they are...
