You may have read that the Obama administration has altered United States government policy and has sanctioned "medical" marijuana by ending raids on "clinics" where "medical" marijuana is passed out.
The use of quotes in the paragraph above is deliberate. It's my view and the views of millions of conservatives that there is no such thing as "medical" marijuana...or at least in the way it's being presented to the public.
"Medical" marijuana is simply a term for pot being sold for profit under the guise that it helps a plethora of medical problems. The "clinics" are essentially drug dens that are attempting to gain a little more respectability. It has been the policy of the United States government to raid and shut down these clinics.
Now here's the problem. There are many so called conservatives that support these drug dens. They say that it's a states right issue. That this isn't a power delegated to the United States government.
Clearly this is a debatable point. For example I would offer that it's in the best interest of the country to ban something that is in the worst interest of the country. For example if we had a communist power develop a drug that would make our citizens lazy and unproductive then nobody would argue that we should allow this power to freely distribute this drug in the United States. There would be no hew and cry about "states rights".
But nonetheless there are those who have seized upon the issue of "medical" marijuana as the ultimate expression of states rights. That's fine. That's their rights as Americans. But here's what I wish.
I wish they would be honest and apply the same standard to abortion and pornography. I wish they would stand up and proclaim that abortion and pornography are in the same league. Because if you want to embrace their viewpoint you MUST embrace pornography and abortion.
Abortion, by their logic, should also be a state right. Pornography, by their logic, should also be a state right. Yet the federal government has mandated, by court decisions and law, that the support of these issues are the law of the land.
Now I happen to believe the opposite. I think these two issues are so dangerous to the country as a whole that they SHOULD be banned nationwide for the common welfare of the union of states.
What happened? It's easy. Religious morality stopped in government. We went from a nation governed by religion based morals a government based on amoral, or immoral principles. And let me make it clear..when I say religious morals I'm talking precisely about Judeo-Christian morality...or at least what this morality used to be.
And here's what these so called new conservatives fail to conserve. They fail to conserve the religious morality that stopped our leaders from ruling from a non-principled viewpoint. They fail to conserve the idea that right and wrong don't come from man or man's laws, but from God, the creator of man. They fail to conserve the notion that certain things are repugnant to God and to those who have His morals.
They have taken up the mantle of the 60's generation. Sex and drugs. Don't tell us what to do. We don't like your morals. Once they succeeded in tearing down God, they began working on the government.
John Adams, the 2nd President of the United States said "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
Oh so true. Without morals and religion our constitution fails. It breaks. It doesn't work. It's inadequate. It can be twisted and shaped to whatever viewpoint the rulers want.
Pot. Abortion. Pornography. All of these are issues that a moral people and a moral government instinctively reject. But remove morality from the equation and anything goes. God save us.
The worst side effect of pot is that it turns you stupid and liberal. Which of course is why leftists love it as an issue.
I don’t want any government power for hardly any reason. I don’t care if little blond Swedish girls are doing meth and the Brooklyn Youth Sports league for needle money.
But, what I would totally support is private property rights restrictions. I, 100% support private business having, if they choose, drug testing. Ditto land lord rights.
Don’t like it, don’t rent, don’t work there.
Further I support private communities. For instance, Florida has tons of private, gated communities that are the size of towns. They have their own schools(sort of ) police, fire, water departments.
I support what ever drug, lawn cutting, color house covenants that you agree to abide by.
Another think. If the government, which is the high cost, low quality, late deliver of services and goods, got out of the way, private enterprise would fill the bill.
For instance. Why do you think so many old Main Streets have bums and such, and Malls do not? Because malls are private and can expel who every they want. Government although taking huge taxes either won’t or doesn’t.
Same with private schools. A kid acts up, he’s out.
So, in my more libertarian, property rights world, would druggies be gone? No, but there would be a lot less places for them to exist in. Further, I wouldn’t be taking money from waitress, truck drivers, small business men to support the existence of druggies and so that the druggie assistance industry( also know as government workers ) had a nice full benefits, pensioned, no heavy lifting jobs.
Let me ask you this.
Is it in the financial interest of government druggie workers to ‘solve’ the problem? Or is it in their interest to, as the union guys say, ‘not kill the job’?
These things are sins not because God decided one days to arbitrarily pick things out of the blue and call them "sins". They're sins because they harm people and and are anathema to a healthy, happy culture.
A friend of mine's dad used to call beer "lazy juice".
Currently in Australia, the government is using prohibition in aboriginal territories to correct severe social problems with great success.”
So if we had have just done Prohibition right it would have worked? That's crazy. Things would have gotten worse and worse. Organized crime would have continued to grow more powerful. Their greed would have never stopped. They would have started pushing other drugs on alcohol users and we'd be talking about what a horrible gateway drug alcohol is. We'd have packed our prisons full of drinkers. Government corruption would have only gotten worse. The violence would have only gotten worse. Everything you see happening in the drug trade today would have happened back then. We only had a few years of Alcohol Prohibition and look at all the problems it caused us. Thank God you weren't running the show back then because you would have made it go on a lot longer and this country would have suffered a lot more. When your efforts didn't work, you'd say it's because we weren't cracking down enough and you'd crank it up a few more notches. This would go on until we resembled Chairman Mao's China.
Oh it was cookin with gas, baby.
If we were all math cyphers, it would work. But we are not.
" Out of the crooked timber of humanity no straight thing was ever made"
Then would you also agree that tobacco and alcohol are fellow antagonists of a “healthy, happy culture”?
It’s true. When I feel it’s affects, I switch over to vodka.
Beer has enabled me to get far more yardwork done in a day than I reasonably should - if I drink enough, I don’t feel the pain until the next day, when I have a nice little hangover to go with. Well, Sunday’s supposed to be a day of rest, anyway.
>> They’re sins because they harm people and and are anathema to a healthy, happy culture.
I wouldn’t say that they are “anathema”, but they certainly aren’t conducive to happiness. If sin necessarily precluded hapiness, there would be no happiness.
We all have our weaknesses — we all have our sin of choice. For some, it is pictures of naked women — for others, it is pious pride in bashing people who like pictures of naked women. We all struggle with something.
Equating pornography with abortion with regard to their cultural consequences (or the level of evil required) is still ridiculous.
SnakeDoc
Are you under the impression that the Tenth Amendment means something other than that?
Good question...if you want to limit harmful effects to death. Now if you're talking about other health problems, psychological problems, cultural problems, and spiritual problems then pot and pornography are right up there.
Hey did I say marijuana was a drug pushed by communists to make our youth disillusioned with American society and make them lazy, unproductive and more susceptible to leftist propaganda? No I did not. But now that you mention it...
“We just went through a 100 years of ‘intellectual honesty’. “
sorry, don’t understand what you mean there.
my post was a poke at using emotional and inaccurate labels instead of reasoned discourse.
