Charles Krauthammer: The Obamaist Manifesto
Townhall ^ | February 27, 2009 | Charles Krauthammer

Posted on 02/26/2009 11:26:25 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Not a great speech, but extremely consequential. If Barack Obama succeeds, his joint address to Congress will be seen as historic — indeed as the foundational document of Obamaism. As it stands, it constitutes the boldest social democratic manifesto ever issued by a U.S. president.

The first part of the speech, justifying his economic stabilization efforts, was mere housekeeping. The economic crisis is to Obama a technocratic puzzle that needs to be solved because otherwise he loses all popular support.

Unlike most presidents, however, he doesn't covet popular support for its own sake. Some men become president to be someone, others to do something. This is what separates, say, a Ronald Reagan from a

Bill Clinton. Obama, who once noted that Reagan altered the trajectory of America as Clinton had not, sees himself a Reagan. Reagan came to office to do something: shrink government, lower taxes, rebuild American defenses. Obama made clear Tuesday night that he intends to be equally transformative. His three goals: universal health care, universal education, and a new green energy economy highly funded and regulated by government.

(1) Obama wants to be to universal health care what Lyndon Johnson was to Medicare. Obama has publicly abandoned his once-stated preference for a single-payer system as in Canada and Britain. But that is for practical reasons. In America, you can't get there from here directly.

Instead, Obama will create the middle step that will lead ultimately and inevitably to single-payer. The way to do it is to establish a reformed system that retains a private health-insurance sector but offers a new government-run plan (based on benefits open to members of Congress) so relatively attractive that people voluntarily move out of the private sector, thereby starving it.

Where's the money coming from?

That's easy. The money will come from each adccording to his ability. It will go to each according to his need.

“They’ve got the money!” He pointed to the size of the budget, and said rich people could be taxed at a higher rate, defense could be cut, and they could “cut the waste” from the budget, and there it is, a big pile of money.

I believe Prez O has stated just that....that's how his (and the rest of the liberal DemocRATS up there) current "welfare" plan is doing it, right?

Baloney!

I have come to disagree with your idea that this is all about Obama. Clinton was all about Clinton. Obama is about radically changing our system to match his views. He is on a mission. Not to say that he is not a narcissist and egomaniac, because obviously he is. His primary goal is radical change to top down government management of our society. It is incredible that so many otherwise smart people couldn't see that last fall.

I distinguish between Liberals and Leftists. Liberals think we’ll get the money from the rich and from those evil corporations. Leftists know otherwise. Their view is that no one should have more personal income than “they need”. Anything over that goes to the government to be spent.

So, no more cars, boats, big homes in the suburbs, overseas vacations, expensive hobbies, etc. We will all live in commie-style block apartment buildings and take mass transit to work.

It’s amazing how many people are still rhapsodizing about how “eloquent” he is. Man, who gives a damn?? I cannot figure out why people place such importance on being able to dazzle. This isn’t the Miss Universe pageant! We got Candy Man running the country and the masses are sighing, “Isn’t he CHARMING???”

I agree with all that you say about him on a mission...however; I think his primarily goal in doing this...is the way he perceives he will go down in history and the way he will be lauded/worshipped by the masses in his lifetime on Earth.

I do NOT believe doing any of this is JUST because in his heart he believes that would better society...he believes that he will be known as the man that forever changed America/the world into his image of what society should be...hence, vaulting himself above all others.

I did see Morris on interview state that he felt Obama cared more about getting his agenda in and started than he did about 2 terms. But Morris is an idiot, I don’t know why people continue to interview him, he has been wrong about nearly everything, I think.

Phil,

Your post 23 is outstanding. It should be it's own thread.

1-20-13: Komrade Øbama's last day

“In a government of laws, the existence of the government will be imperiled if it fails to observe the law scrupulously. Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy .” Olmstead v. U.S., 277 U.S. 438 (1928)

Where's the money coming from?

From you and your descendants in the form of higher taxes, higher interest rates and more inflation. Call and write your Congress critters! Argue one topic at a time. There's global cooling, not anthropogenic global warming.

Carbon Regulation: One Scientist's Unscientific Dream?

These fools will strangle the economy. This crap will guarantee a depression. Those RINOs in the Senate better wake up. Carbon dioxide is NOT a pollutant. This is nuts!
