Pennsylvania Republican Committee Chairman Robert Gleason Jr. said in an interview today that the state party may not support Sen. Arlen Specter in the Republican primary next year -- a day after his national counterpart suggested that GOP supporters of the economic stimulus bill could take a hit in upcoming elections.
"Of course, anything is a possibility," Gleason told The Morning Call. "It is up to the committeemen and committeewomen [next February]. But the headline should not read that the state party is not going to endorse him. He certainly could be endorsed."
Gleason said that -- right now -- he is 100 percent supportive of Specter, but he would not commit to personally backing the five-term lawmaker when committee members endorse candidates next year.
"I really cant make that call right now. That is kind of a what-if question. I really dont know what it is going to be like," he said. "I dont even know if he is going to be a candidate. Who knows what is going to happen a year from now. With all this conjecture about Arlen Specters reelection effort if he is a candidate, we will cross that bridge when we get there."
Specter's vote for the economic stimulus bill ruffled GOP feathers throughout the country, but particularly in Pennsylvania, where the lawmaker has always stood on shaky ground with conservatives. He eked out a challenge from former Rep. Pat Toomey in a primary in 2004.
Specter has acknowledged the potential political impact of his vote.

Ping
“Gleason: Pa. GOP may not back Specter”
“MAY NOT BACK SPECTOR’????? Well, give me any reason why they SHOULD . . . Why do they even have any doubts? The guy’s a traitor and a socialist . . . case closed??????
Good!
Agreed. It would have been nice if he said WILL not back Specter...
Is Toomey up for a rematch?
“Fiscal Conservative” ping
An out of the closet ‘rat would be better than Specter. Everyone would know where they stand and the voting pattern would be identical.
Gleason said that -- "right now -- he is 100 percent supportive of Specter" ...
I don’t know what this guy just said. ‘We may endorse him, but we may not. I dunno.’ I think that’s what he said. Why bother saying it?
I think that Toomey is planning on running for Guv.
I say , lets shove it up his whatever, and lets see if the next guy will get elected. What exactly is left to lose, otherwise?
They better not support him. Not one cent to the GOP if any one of the states supports the RINOs. I realize the States are autonomous but they need to understand there will be NO GOP NATIONAL support is they run one of these RINOs. I’m through with the GOP supporting Democrats who are allowed to call themselves Republican. Back to Basics guys!
Specter has acknowledged the potential political impact of his vote.
IOW, he’s counting on voters having a short memory and win anyway..
Damn right. Specter deserves retirement. And we deserve a real candidate.
Ah, Chairman Steele, are you listening? I too understand the state Party is separate, but national money can get funneled to state Parties. Not one dime to Specter, Snowe and Collins! Not one, thin dime, or you can kiss the grass roots support for the RNC goodbye.
I agree with laweeks. May not support? May not support? That opens up the possibility that they will support. Spector should have already lost his committee assignments and the Gleason should have demanded this man resign not pussy foot around.
Again if anyone finds the Republican Party’s testicles could you please forward them to Micheal Steele! I am not sure he will know how to use them but at least it is a start!
If the Republican party supports the three traitors then i will never give a penny to the party again and I will re-register as Independant.
Ain’t gonna happen,
We all will shout it to the heavens.
Specter is a traitorous p.o.s. rino turd. Not worth a bucket of horse manure.
