The eyes of Obama are not upon me...
Vanity Foul | 24 Feb 2008 | snarks_when_bored

The eyes of Obama are not upon me because Obama never, ever looks straight into the camera when he gives a speech. He looks to his left, he looks to his right, he looks to his left, he looks to his right, ...

It's as if his breathless fans don't even exist...

When I see his mug on t.v. I put the mute on. I listened to him when he was campaigning just to give him a chance. Decided that I don’t rust him and still don’t. The mute comes in handy.

(laugh) I had the mute on during the entire speech...I was just glancing at the screen every now and then to make sure he wasn't looking into the camera. He wasn't.

You wouldn’t want The One to look right at you. The brilliance, the sheer overflowing goodness of him would burst your heart. < /chris matthews >

Of course, if you do look into his eyes, he will probably hypnotize you, with his snake-like gaze and mesmerizing voice. Yes, it is difficult for an empty suit to accomplish, but he can do it, for after all, he is The One.

The Dow and Nasdaq futures started to sell off towards the end of the speech; they’re now near their low of the evening session.

He cannot look at 'you'. He MUST read the telepromter; that is why his head is on 'left/right' rotation.

Don't take it personally. . .Of course, he is not big on eye contact, anyway; preferring to just miss the 'contact point'. . .that which makes for an honest gaze.

Bobby Jindal’s sound crew ought to be sent home. His mike is cutting in and out. Sad. And what’s the roar in the background? Amateur hour. At least he’s looking towards the camera, though...

The main camera has to be close enough to read the prompter, they’d have to build a platform in front of the lectern for it. I don’t think any of the politicians attending would be willing to give up their seats, even to make BO look better.

Just off the cuff, I'm pretty sure that technicians could make it work. But, clearly, there was no interest in doing so.

Were I Obama's advisors, I'd have him memorize a few sentences for use in a few sections of the speech, and put into the teleprompter cues to look straight ahead and deliver the lines. But if he has a bad memory, that would be dangerous. Does he? Who knows? We don't know a thing about his intellectual abilities, at least as those are judged by grades and the like.

You are so correct.

He is just the “talking head”.

Was annoyed by Bam’s head moves the last time he took over my TV.
Reminds me a bit of my soon-to-be new driver checking his mirrors in preparation for the big test.
Perhaps more annoying than Bam’s head fakes was the mouth activity of the Speaker of the House. What’s up with that? Can she keep her maw still for more than 5 seconds?

I call it his teleprompter tennis match. Its like he is watching a continuous volley with a manic gleam in his eye.

But if he has a bad memory, that would be dangerous.

I suspect his handlers back in Chicago don't much want him going off-script. Seriously, I wonder who does his speech writing? Might be interesting to know if it was normal staff, or if a theme/framework comes from Chicago directly from O to the writers.

It’s only possible if you actually identify with the speech and make it yours. Reagan didn’t hesitate to look over the speeches and make the necessary changes that conformed to his principles. Obama is likely beholden to his speechwriter.

I’m sure he, Reagan, was disciplined enough to make the speech his, to put in the appropriate amount of work involved in loosely memorizing what he was about to read. It takes a sharp, confident mind to be able to gaze away from the teleprompter while still speaking the words.

I believe this is Obama’s problem. The man is an undisciplined puppet.

Given the choice between studying a speech and shooting hoops, I think we know which one Obama would choose.
