MOSCOW - Russia will respond to any attempts to militarize the Arctic, the head of the country's armed forces was quoted as saying on Monday during a visit to Abu Dhabi.
"Overall, we are looking at how far the region will be militarized. Depending on that, we'll then decide what to do," Interfax news agency quoted General Nikolai Makarov, the head of the General Staff, as saying.

"When there is a proposal, there will be a discussion," Interfax quoted Makarov as saying. "It is much too early to speak about that now."
Saber rattling . . . Obama will soil his shorts and cave just like the wimp that he is.
On the bright side, Obama will make sure out Navy is ordered to port, so that no escalation takes place.
Peace in our time...
We’ve heard this many time before.
The wisest move is to not continually poke the bear.
Who is militarizing the Arctic?
It depends on what you are poking with and where is the bear. If the bear is crashing into your home, poking him with a .50 cal is good. If he is sleeping and you poke him with a stick, no so good.
Especially with the current political leadership we have in this country.
IT WAS THAT EVIL BUSH, HE PUT WEAPONS ON THE POLAR BEARS. LOL!!!!
We all like war (a whole lot) but there’s no reason to travel to the Bear’s backyard just to poke him.
Orca with frikken “lasers” on their heads. :)
When Palin brought up the real Russian threat, the media mocked her and played down the relevancy of Alaska.
No one ‘likes’ war, but it is sometimes a necessity. Sometimes standing up stops the war from happening... However, in this case, no one is going into the bear’s back yard, the bear is coming into our back yard (unless your analogy is reversed and you aren’t referring to the bear in this case as the Russians re the old Soviet Bear metaphor.)
Don’t forget the Narwhals with the limpet mines on their tusks. LOL!!!!
Actually that would be kinda cool.
Armored Polar Bear Brigades Attack!
Hmmmmm.... Okay... I can see where the Russians would announce that they would respond to any militarization of the Arctic, seeing as how much of Russia borders on the Arctic.
The question I have is: What militarization of the Arctic is he talking about? Militarization by WHOM?
I guess I should probably have gone and read the original article, because it’s not clear to me what “militarization” the Russian fellow is referring to.
The U.S. and the Soviets / Russians have long sent nuclear subs into the arctic on various missions - that’s been going on for well over 40 years now, so it’s not exactly “news”.
Considering that there still is no way to actively defend against a sub-launched or land-launched ballistic missile (ICBM) and that the sub-launched missiles can easily reach Russia without the sub even necessarily leaving the dock, I’m not sure I see why supposedly “militarizing” the Arctic would even offer any advantages.
That poor, poor polar bear, having to be seen in public wearing gold plates. It’s just horribly destructive to the polar bear’s self-esteem.
Which is why I have formed a new activist group:
PoBIDL (Po)lar (B)ear (I)nternational (D)efense (L)eague.
Watch PETA will jump all over this, no doubt.
