Sales Up 10% for (Gun and Ammo) Manufacturers in Third Quarter
National Shooting Sports Federation ^ | 2-16-2009 | NSSF

$90 MILLION GENERATED FOR CONSERVATION . . . New data from the U.S. Treasury Department show sales by firearm and ammunition manufacturers increased 9.7 percent between July and September when compared to the same period the previous year. Sales of pistols and revolvers were up 23.6 percent, ammo sales rose 8.4 percent and long gun sales saw a 4.1 percent increase, according to the latest Pittman-Robertson federal excise tax collection report. Excise taxes are calculated as a percentage of wholesale receipts, paid quarterly by firearm and ammunition manufacturers, and earmarked for state wildlife conservation and habitat restoration programs. These statistics are based solely on U.S. civilian sales and do not include sales to military, police, etc. During the quarter, $89.7 million was generated for conservation -- $19.8 million was collected for pistols and revolvers, $33.2 million for long guns and $36.6 million for ammunition. The latest tax collections suggest overall sales of $834.2 million, not including retail markup or final retail sales. Total excise tax collections for the federal government's fiscal year (Oct. 1 to Sept. 30) were $321.9 million.

Excise Tax Collections: July - September

Handguns $19,882,672.52

Long Guns $33,253,298.08

Ammunition $36,643,018.49

Total $89,778,989.09

Firearms and ammunition excise tax collections for third quarter of calendar year 2008.

Note that this is for the third quarter, ending more than a month before the election. Fourth quarter sales will be VERY interesting.

Stay with it. Maybe one day you’re gonna need it.

First time gun owner? I would get a 9mm, good stopping power, not too much recoil, and cheapest center fire ammo. Best gun will be a Sig, but there are plenty of excellent brands. Also don’t overlook revolvers, easy to shoot and operate and a breeze to clean.

get a Benelli shotgun to go with your handgun. Makes for a nice 1-2 punch.

Tupac Shakur survived being shot with a 9mm five times. If you want real stopping power the smallest caliber I suggest is .40 S&W.

FWIW, I’ve got a friend who was on the Olympic and World shotgun teams. She said she would not recommend Benelli because of the problems she saw other competitors have with them; jamming, etc. She was on the teams about 10 years ago. Perhaps they’ve changed the design since then, but have always heeded her advice and bought Beretta.

You can buy both for less than $600.00 together.

“Tupac Shakur survived being shot with a 9mm five times.”

I doubt the shooter spent much time at the range.

9mm can kill. Heck, a .22 can kill.

I have a .45 for CCW with a capacity of 7 and a 9mm with a capacity of 14. In a horrible situation, you may need those extra shots.

I’m thinking of a Remington 870 - switchable barrels, one for home defense, one for turkey hunting.

That was through a car and probably slowed down a ton. Hollow points can add some extra damage, of course for home defense nothing beats a short barreled 12 gauge shotgun with 000 buckshot.

Very nice indeed. Can be pricey but definitely worth it. I wouldn't recommend it for home defense though.

Long barrels are difficult to maneuver in the house

Speaking of Guns and Ammo...today I went to my local Big5 Sporting goods to add a little ammo that I'm short on (12ga, .22 and .357) and was disappointed in the extreme.

They wanted my ID AND A THUMB PRINT...new ordinance in the City of Sacramento, CA.

I'll have to go outside the city limits and buy a bunch, along with primers, bullets and powder.

It's gettin' spooky out there folks.

Got one next to the bed. CCW is either a .45ACP with Glaser Blues or a .44 Mag with hollow points.
