CNN: Dems target right-wing talk radio

WASHINGTON (CNN) — More and more Democrats in Congress are calling for action that Republicans warn could muzzle right-wing talk radio.

Representative Maurice Hinchey, a Democrat from New York is the latest to say he wants to bring back the "Fairness Doctrine," a federal regulation scrapped in 1987 that would require broadcasters to present opposing views on public issues.

"I think the Fairness Doctrine should be reinstated," Hinchey told CNNRadio. Hinchey says he could make it part of a bill he plans to introduce later this year overhauling radio and t-v ownership laws.

If this happens, there will be no talk radio. Period. It’s not worth the hassle for stations to monitor, record and worry about equal time for both sides. Learn to love cooking, finance and remodeling shows, all coming to an AM station near you.

I'll reduce my "carbon footprint" by turning off the radio. None of that crap is interesting. The only reason to have it on is to make a list of the advertisers so you can inform them that you're not listening.

I didn't start listening to the AM radio again until Desert Shield got underway. I dropped my radio listening habits in 1966 when my family moved to Springfield, VA. There was nothing on the local stations of interest. It was an easy habit to drop.

I've ignored short wave most of my life. It may be time to have a look again. I have a decent radio receiver. It might be time to find an even better one.

On another thread, the talk of "fiscal responsibility" aka "let's raise taxes" just surfaced. Per the Wall Street Journal, the top bracket + payroll taxes yields an FIT rate of 52.2%. My state sucks 7.8%. That means I lose 60% of every gross dollar earned to FIT+SIT+SSN+Medicare. It might make sense to earn LESS money if I can figure out how to leave about the same net income. Why work my ass off to feed the socialist beast?

This reminds heavily of the Sedition Act which limited what could be said about government. It caused an electoral defeat.

Americans do not like it, and this will backfire onto the Democrats.

You three have been around these threads for a long time, approaching nearly 10 years each. As freepers you have accumulated nearly 30 years of experience. What the hell are you doing?

I saw nothing in Lurker's comments that warrant a personal counterattack. He is right. There will be nothing done, there will be "no hell to pay" if the Democrats ram the fairness doctrine through and shut down talk radio. We're all sophisticated enough to know that they probably won't go the fairness doctrine route anyway, they will probably set up community Soviets and let them shut down talk radio. But whenever the facts on the ground, why are we spewing rubbish? Why are we fulminating about resistance that will never materialize?

If you're willing to say that there will be consequences to shutting down talk radio, you should be willing to lay them out when challenged. If you assert an alternative plan, you should be able to tell us about it when challenged.

Why do we accuse Lurker with a 10 years cyber trail on Free Republic of being a traitor? If you disagree with his opinion argue a point but lay off the ad hominem.

Yesterday in a different context I published posts which contains the following thoughts. My point is that we should have had a lot more "defeatism" on these threads for the last six or eight years and, maintaining faith that Republicans of national importance read these threads, perhaps we might have encountered a different destiny in the last two elections. Many, many times as I predicted the electoral disasters to come, I was pilloried as a "defeatist." It does not matter if one offers affirmative ideas, it only matters that one fails to cheerlead. We will never save conservatism, and therefore never save the Republic, if we are incapable of dealing with reality no matter how unpalatable the prospect. Here is a portion of yesterday's post:

What this means is that our side is virtually impotent. It means that when the Democrats propose one of the worst pieces of legislation in living memory which is risible in its waste and corruption, the liberal machine rolls over the only open microphone left to us: talk radio. Soon even that soapbox will be taken from us.

What this means is that when you hear cheerleaders on these threads in the run-up to the next election, and the election after that, assuring you that the polls don't mean anything, that they have talked to their grandmother who is going to vote Republican for the first time in her 90 years, that the people will never permit the country to turn socialist, do not believe them. They do not even have the first understanding of the demographic landslide under which Republicans must survive like troglodytes.

The time to come to a sober understanding of our dilemma is not after the electorate has been bagged by the Democrats and their media, it is now. We must now understand what we're up against and we must begin now to fashion tactics and strategies to survive the coming Republican crackup. Those of us who predicted in writing on these threads the oncoming electoral disasters of 2006 and 2008 long before these elections took place, have earned the credibility denied to us during the Bush years.

Unwilling to appear a sorehead, I neglected to add the truth that smears of "defeatist" only prevent any realistic effort to grapple with reality.

I think I still lived in NYS when this clown was voted in...before him, was a very good nice Republican and people at that time wanted "change"...like all stupid people they think voting for "change" is somehow inherently good...

didn't he replace McHugh?

remember, Maurice represents the likes of Cornell,Ithaca College, Binghamton University.....if every student there voted any communist would get elected.......

I think if we all could get to the point where our mortgages are paid off, we could not have to be making endless paychecks just to survive.....

earn less, spend less, but pay less taxes as well....

so they say Rush And Hannity Have been Lying about the Spending bill , ALL they have been doing is what the Press and OBAMA have not ,GIVE DETAILS .
So what would the 50 percent of the liberal time been used for this past week if the fairness doctrine been in effect?
Well We need this bill ,it is an emergency , the Republicans have taken care of their rich friends for years, its time for CHANGE,dont listen to Rush Listen to us,we will create 4 million jobs with this bill. You notice not one mention of ANYTHING THAT IS ACTUALLY IN THE BILL.
By contrast we know they are going to take over the Health care industry and dictate form Washington what care you can and cannot get,ACORN is going to get reparations, welfare is going to expand,Pelosi is going to protect a Mouse,Medicaid is going to get millions,Roads and Bridges will be built a few years from now etc.etc. Not that we can do anything about it But because of Right wing radio we have information not BS

“I have full confidence that conservatives will get the message out....

Uh..yeah. True. But a couple of huge differences. First, the news media is now much more openly “in the tank” for the left precisely because of Reagan’s landslides. They covered him as hough he really couldn’t win - and the results scared the beejeezus out of them. They now know Conservatism has to be fully stopped because it WILL win - that’s why they went after Sarah Palin so viciously and that’s why the left NEEDS to destroy Talk Radio. It’ll be much easier for them to carry out their Marxist agenda with no opposition to question them, or having to rig and fix elections, taking the chances that rivals can expose it.

And the second thing is, back then, there wasn’t a talk radio business anyway. Talk Radio is the major effect of Reagans landslides, and both have brought us the far more openly Marxist Left of today. They KNOW they cannot win on ideas, so Conservative opposition must be destroyed. THATS why their attempt at getting these guys off the air is so important to them. Once they do it, they fully know they will have weakened the opposition, probably into the forseeable future.

The Marxists now in power have no intention of ever giving it up. We’re on our way to becoming Venezuela, with Obama as Chavez. And there’s not much we can do about it.

You really need to read the comments after this article to get a grip on the mindset of your average Obababot:

Right wing radio would be OK in theory, but in practice it' really just a bunch of lies and incitement to violence. It's part of a corporate conspiracy of right wing CEOs. It's really a menace on the land and, more in sorrow than anger, it must be controlled for it's own good. And that First Amendment thing doesn't apply because of the yelling fire in a theater thing. Because their politics are so foul, and they really creep me out when I'm trying to visualize world peace, letting them have a voice is no different than letting people incite riots. So no First Amendment for them.

And they're liars too. Media Matters For America even says so, and they are only interested in the truth. Obama is all that is true and good. Those that oppose him lie.

It's hard to decide if these people are more frightening or stupid.

Agreed. It makes no sense to support an ever growing crowd of veritable econo-ticks always sucking blood from the tax payers. I could see a trend of non-tax paying droolers becoming a huge voting block and it looks like my nightmare came true.

Speaking of SW receivers, my little source of sanity during Clinton was nothing more than a battery powered pocket model with a little wire antenna that I strung up to the window. It wasn’t all that convenient but it worked, I don’t know why I didn’t invest in a better table model.

In the Navy I had a little Hallicrafters radio that I used when stationed in remote area (Alaska), it was a life saver, this was in the early 60s. I’m investing (and they’re not all that expensive) in a better set for this administration.

Regards,

Right out of Saul Alinski’s “Rules for Radicals”. Silence all the opposition first. Then take total control.

I have a feeling Rush is working on something.

I recall Rush saying some years ago that if they ran him off the air he would start a pirate station off the coast.

I'm not sure he has the enthusiasm to do it today.

All he’d have to do is go to Mexico and get a gazillion megawatt tower. Those Mexican stations come in nice and clear some 10,000 miles away.

They're "strung out" man.

Did you ever notice how many Leftwingtards talk like they have their mouths full of potato chips? That's because they've got the munchies.

Depending on what the Leftwingtards do we have to be prepared to engage in effective acts of self-defense.

The LEFT has a track record of paying personal visits and murdering people. We'd be much better off without any of them of course, but it takes more than mere argument to "convert" them to the truth ~ knowing that, we must continue to be on the lookout for the first stages of their violent nature so that they don't ever get to make those personal visits.

They (the liberals) control both legislative and the executive branches of the government. They control all of the media except radio. So that's next. The internet will be easy to control.
Then there is the judicial. if I were Roberts, Scalia, Thomas or Aleito, I would be very very careful. After all accidents happen.
