ANDERSON, S.C. -- Some people call it racial profiling without a reason, others say it's a suspicious circumstance.
For the second day in a row, on Thursday protesters gathered at an Anderson construction site, demonstrating against what they claim are illegal workers.
The general contractor said that its masonry subcontractor has made assurances that all its workers are in the U.S. legally.
The project is a new Anderson city fire station near Simpson Road and Highway 81.
I hope nobody gets hurt...no Americans leastwise. hehehe
Funny, the economy goes to hell and suddenly these jobs ARE what Americans want.
It’s generally acknowledged that the now-widespread problem began in the housing/construction sector. The very place where illegals began putting American tradesmen and subcontractors out of work and out of business starting years ago. But, in all this “economic recovery” talk, there’s not a single significant mention of this fact. How does anyone expect to correct a problem when the so-called “leaders” won’t even mention something which played such a major role in causing it?
Our government allows in about 1 million LEGAL immigrants a year. Add that to the illegals who are still entering and you have significant competition for jobs that American workers increasingly would be more than happy to do. Then, grant amnesty to the illegals who are already here, giving them the right to bring in their families and their families’ families, and you have effectively nudged native born Americans out of the job market to an extraordinary degree in many job categories.
Don’t companies have to prove in some way that they can’t get American workers before they can contract even LEGAL immigrants to do it?
That is the way of the economy. I was watching a bit about farms in Andalucia in Spain. During the boom years, the locals didn’t want to pick fruit on the farms and the farms were literally rotting away. they HAD to import labor from Africa to do these jobs. But now, there are no jobs of any sort in Andalucia — 21% unemployment, so the immigrants have to go back and the locals who thought the farm jobs were beneath them are now looking for any kind of job
bump
There is a loop hole in the Laws here; The City leaders can rely on the words of the construction company.
I believe some of the home builders in Ga and SC find Illegals who can speak English and is educated to set up a front companies to hire the illegals. That way if there is investigation by law enforcement the Home builder can claim it was the front company responsibility to check the status of workers. The front company will change its name and continue taking work from Americans.
The city or the buyer of a new home has no right to question the construction company. Currently South Carolina reminds of California of the 1980s.
I am headed out to the protest site, to see if I can get some photo’s and statements.
Obviously there are jobs even Spaniards won’t do unless they’re paid more.
If they are working on a government contract, shouldn’t the information about the contractor/subcontractor and the employees working on the job be public record?
No...there are few if any provisions that require employers to “prove” they cannot find Americans to do the work.
This is sad, because South Carolina has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country....and hiring illegal aliens over Americans will not help.
As much as I like their governor, Mark Sanford, he needs to step up and stop this. If he is really a conservative, he would put a halt to this in some way.
The goal of the republican party for years has been to depress wages and scream about minimum wage, while at the same time moan about like of buyer in the market. FOOLS!!!!!
I think most of them are about at a level of competence to say, “Do you want fries with that?” Beyond that, they’re drowning. That would be fine, excpet they drag us under with them.
Put correct hardware in trunk!!
Wonder how many voted last November?
It is about time that we got the unions and the blacks to demo against illegals taking their jobs.
Getting the high paid construction jobs during a depression may be the last straw.
