WASHINGTON (AFP) – US Energy Secretary Steven Chu has floated the idea of a carbon emissions tax to fight global warming, in an interview with The New York Times Thursday.
During the US presidential campaign, the notion was kept largely on the back burner as candidates were reluctant to promote the idea of costlier energy at a time when gasoline prices were soaring.
But since President Barack Obama's administration took office in January, Congress has been working on setting up a system for swapping greenhouse gas emissions quotas similar to the one used in the European Union.
And Chu said "alternatives could emerge, including a tax on carbon emissions," the Times reported.
Chu, a Nobel laureate in physics, long concerned about global warming, acknowledged it would be a tough sell to get a law passed in the United States that could lead to higher energy prices.

Yeah, that’s just what we need in the midst of a severe recession/potential catastrophe (Obama’s words): a tax to solve a non-existent problem. Part of me hopes they will do it because it is such a blatent and blind overreach. Unfortunately, so much of the electorate has been brainwashed, they might think it was a good thing.

He may be a Nobel laureate, but he shows very little common sense? Will he tax farting cows as is proposed in Denmark? What about the methane gas associated with the rotting process of vegetation in swamps? Has he heard of swamp gas?And how about the constant seepage from underground gas reservoirs? He should be forced to return his Nobel prize.
This over-educated anti-American con artist is sure gonna make a lot of money taxing Volcanoes! Any chance we can send this American-hating bass turd back to his America-hating country of origin?
If we were to get rid of all America-haters, this country would almost empty itself and we would not have an occupant of the WH. No more mosques, no more Congress. Now, THAT”S UTOPIA.
How about taxing more based on excessive usage?..Al Gore could probably fund Porkulus.
I thought Chu was intelligent. He seems to have fallen for Gore’s propaganda
without looking at it critically.
I thought the Energy Secretary’s job was to see that we have adequate supplies of energy. Instead, he’s proposing a tax on energy. I’ll say again, as long as “environmental” groups control Washington, we will have no energy development.
How about all the people who have a compost pile for their garbage, which they then use in the spring to fertilize their fardens????
Will the Mexican areas of Los Angeles get a higher carbon fart tax because of the refried beans they all eat??

I've read a couple of pieces this week indicating that the issue of global warming is now dead last among the concerns of the American people.
With the global economy in such turmoil, it's going to be damn near impossible for politicos to sell the cap and trade scheme, or to implement "green taxes".
I also saw something about Algore nearly weeping about how he'd "failed", this week. This, after the Met (British Meteorological office) issued a scathing statement about global warming alarmism.
Well, all Lord Obama left me with is some "change", and some lint in my pockets.
I hear that my "betters" like the new Treasury Secretary and Tom Daschle didn't pay any taxes at all. How's that work again?

Not bad. My improvement: I think an "oxygen tax" would up the ante. After all, you can't make carbon dioxide without oxygen. Nor can you breathe.
