Patrick Bibb, a 19-year-old from Dallas, glanced at his cell phone. He was in the middle of his economics class at Texas Christian University on a February morning. His caller ID read withheld. He decided not to answer. When class ended, he checked his messages and found that George W. Bush had been trying to reach him.
The sophomore listened to the voice mail. He heard the former president of the United States thank him at least four times. Bush was happy that the teenager had been selling welcome home george & laura signs for $20 to people all over Bush's neighborhood in Texas. “I hope this message is sufficient” to show appreciation, Bibb heard Bush say. Bibb dutifully listened, hung up and went to his other classes.
Bibb, a budding entrepreneur, had decided to make and sell the signs after he learned that the former president would be moving close to his parents’ house. The placards went up all around the exclusive Preston Hollow neighborhood in North Dallas, which is studded with homes worth $5 million to $20 million. Bibb used some of the profits to pay his tuition and decided to donate the rest to a nearby elementary school.
He settled into accounting class. His phone rang again. Bibb decided to pick up. “Excuse me, I need to go to talk to the president,” Bibb wisecracked to a pal as he left the room. It was Bush again.
He began thanking Bibb, repeatedly, for making the signs. Bibb listened patiently. He didn't mean to be rude, but he finally said: “I'm really sorry, Mr. President. I'm in the middle of class.” He needed to get off the phone. Bush replied: “No problem, that's where you're supposed to be.”
Weeks later, the undergraduate was still wondering about his chat with the man who, only a short time ago, was arguably the most powerful man on the planet. “I had just wanted him to know that people still cared about him, despite the public-opinion polls,” says Bibb.
Bibb’s not the only one. Molly Vilbig, who lives nearby, believes Bush had gotten word that her grandson had once tried, at the tender age of 6, to donate $1 to the first Bush for President campaign. That's why, Vilbig suspects, the ex-president called and invited the 14-year-old to come over. Under the watchful eye of Secret Service agents, the boy walked to Bush's home. The two settled into chairs in the backyard. “Ask me anything you want,” Bush said to the boy, according to the grandmother.
A nice story. Thanks for posting it here.
Thanks, WCG, nice story.
SANAA -- A senior Yemeni official warned on Tuesday of acts of sabotage that could be jointly launched by Al-Qaeda Organization in the Arabian Peninsula and the local militant group of Al-Hawthis. The terrorist acts of Al-Qaeda organization mainly target countries that lack security and stability such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia, Yemeni Deputy Prime Minister for Security and Defense Affairs Rashad Muhammad Al-Alimi told reporters here.
"The organization could join hands with Al-Hawthis in wreaking havoc on Yemen and use the country as a launch pad for their terrorist acts regionally and internationally," he warned. Al-Alimi made the remarks after Al-Qaeda leader Abu Basir Nasser Al-Wahayshi approved in an audio tape on Wednesday the militant activities in southern part of the Arabian Peninsula in a clear reference to Yemen.

Khamenei alleges US terror plot
5-19-09
Tehran - Irans Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused the US yesterday of promoting terrorism in border areas and using arms and money against the Islamic state. Khameneis verbal attack is likely to disappoint US President Barack Obamas administration, which is seeking rapprochement with Iran after three decades of mistrust. The Pentagon said his comments were terribly ironic because Tehran was undermining stability in neighbouring Iraq and Afghanistan.

Britain is vulnerable to terrorist attack from the sea because no single body is responsible for protecting the UK's coast, MPs have warned. Just nine Royal Navy ships along with a "motley collection" of police and coastguard boats guard a shoreline more than 7,000 miles long.
The Commons defence committee suggests developing a "deterrent capability" to ward off sea-borne attacks. The Ministry of Defence has insisted clear procedures are in place. Concerns over the UK's preparations for dealing with a maritime terrorist threat were raised by the committee.

Pakistan troops fight Taleban on streets
May 20, 2009
PESHAWAR: Pakistan's military said yesterday troops were locked in fierce street battles with Taleban fighters in the northwest, where a rights group accused both sides of killing civilians. Military officials said government forces were advancing on several fronts towards Mingora, the Taliban-held main town in the Swat valley-once a scenic tourist hotspot but ripped apart by a two-year battle to enforce sharia law.
The blistering offensive against Islamist militants, who are said to threaten the sovereignty of the nuclear-armed nation, has concentrated increasingly on the valley in what the government calls a mission to "eliminate" militants. "We had to launch a military operation because these people challenged the writ of the government. They declared democracy, parliament, the constitution and judiciary as un-Islamic," Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said.

Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood officials face 'terror camp' charges
18 May 2009
Cairo - Thirteen officials from Egypt's banned opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, have been formally charged with terrorism and money laundering in Cairo. According to the Arab daily, al-Hayat, the leaders have been accused of running "secret training camps called 'jihadist camps' where they trained groups of students in armed combat".
The most important member of the group, Osama Nasr, has been accused of "having supported an illegal group that uses terrorism to achieve its aims and publishes brochures and and books to spread its ideological message, recycling money obtained from terrorism".
Prosecutors claim that the accused hid their training camps behind the guise of so called "sports camps" and young recruits were taught how to use arms before being sent to "war zones" to show their solidarity for besieged Gazans their and opposition to Israel's recent military offensive.
