Cheney warns of new attacks

Former Vice President Dick Cheney warned that there is a “high probability” that terrorists will attempt a catastrophic nuclear or biological attack in coming years, and said he fears the Obama administration’s policies will make it more likely the attempt will succeed.

In an interview Tuesday with Politico, Cheney unyieldingly defended the Bush administration’s support for the Guantanamo Bay prison and coercive interrogation of terrorism suspects.

And he asserted that President Obama will either backtrack on his stated intentions to end those policies or put the country at risk in ways more severe than most Americans — and, he charged, many members of Obama’s own team — understand.

“When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry,” Cheney said.

Computer hard drive sold on eBay 'had details of top secret U.S. missile defence system'

Highly sensitive details of a US military missile air defence system were found on a second-hand hard drive bought on eBay. The test launch procedures were found on a hard disk for the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defence) ground to air missile defence system, used to shoot down Scud missiles in Iraq.

The disk also contained security policies, blueprints of facilities and personal information on employees including social security numbers, belonging to technology company Lockheed Martin - who designed and built the system. British researchers found the data while studying more than 300 hard disks bought at computer auctions, computer fairs and eBay.

Pakistan: Military intensifies fighting in Swat as hundreds flee
8 May 2009

Mingora - Pakistani jets bombed suspected militant positions in the northwest Swat valley on Friday as hundreds of thousands of people continued to flee the area. The government claimed at least 140 militants had been killed in in the past 24 hours in Swat and threatened to step up its military offensive.

Addressing a media conference late Friday, army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said security forces would remain in the valley until the government had re-established control. "The army is now engaged in a full-scale operation to eliminate miscreants," Athar Abbas said. "They are on the run and trying to block the exodus of civilians from the area." While it was impossible to confirm the death toll independently, Pakistani security forces were conducting ongoing operations across three districts — Swat, Buner and Lower Dir — in northwest Pakistan .

The United Nations has warned that the Swat offensive is causing a humanitarian crisis with up to 300,000 already displaced or about to flee the fighting. As jets and helicopters pounded targets in the valley, the UN said it was threatening to become one of the world's biggest displacement crises. Security forces carried out a massive air operation and sent fresh troops into Swat after prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani announced that ‘decisive steps would be taken’ to address the growing militancy.

Weird. I was just there on Friday. My daughter and I went to Laramie on Thursday to pick up my granddaughter, Hope, drove to the Springs on Friday AM to pick up my other granddaughter, Heidi, at the airport, then on to Denver for a day of shopping. Back to Laramie for my daughter’s graduation from the U of WYO. She got her Master’s on Saturday. (really proud of her....it’s been a long struggle for her.) Got home late last night. Still playing catch up.

Thank you very much for that link, that was quite interesting. I take 1000 IU daily - but will try the 2000 since I have one very bad knee.

Best to stock up while these are still at a reasonable price. Once the vitamin companies learn about this the price will probably go up.

The Pruning Begins
Perhaps it went unnoticed, but the longtime florist in chief at the White House was pushed out of her position. Lady M and Toes were behind the putsch; they thought the woman was just a little too loyal to the Bush Administration approach to flower arranging. That is, cutting flowers and sticking them in vases full of water. Michelle said the current flower-arranging policy is akin to waterboarding the flowers. Who knew drinks with Nancy Pelosi could lead to this?

Ill. school on lockdown; suspicious bottle found

LOCKPORT, Ill. (AP) — A suburban Chicago high school is on lockdown after a device was found in a hallway that may have contained toxic substances.

A statement from school district officials says a plastic bottle was used to release black smoke and possible chemicals into the area as students were arriving at Lockport Township High School’s Central Campus.

School officials say nine students and one staff member are being treated for possible exposure to their eyes and skin to a toxic substance.....
