I went through Amsterdam's Schiphol airport in December 2005, and I thought the security was very thorough. In January 2006 I went through Frankfurt, Tel Aviv, and Munich. I would have said Amsterdam was second only to Tel Aviv.
In 2005 at Amsterdam, you went through three distinct security checks. The regular one going into the concourse, and a second x-ray and metal detector at the gate. But before the second metal detector, you went through an interview with the airport security which was more thorough then the entry interview going into Israel.
These were not the "did you pack your own bags" kind of questions. These were questions designed to reveal if you were not who you said you were. What hotel did you stay in Holland, where did you travel within Holland, where did you arrive from, etc.
For me, the pre-boarding interview was a challenge when I had to explain I had transited six countries and nine airports in the previous week and a half.
There was a family in front of me and they interviewed the man and woman separately and simultaneously while another airport policeman watched their kids.
It was pretty confidence inspiring compared to our TSA.

Hmmm, we had the ‘tests’ from mid-west airports. We’ve had the same NWA flight affected - today by another Nigerian locked in the bathroom for an hour. However, I’d be cautious that others would be using the same technique in light of the failure yesterday. But other attempts - most certainly.
Yes, testing, a failed attempt and a “coincidence” of a disturbance on the same flight as the failed attempt. If Adbulmutallab says it’s part of a larger plan....I’d believe him over Janet Napolitano’s false assurances.

Phoenix and federal authorities detained two men acting suspicious aboard a Phoenix-bound plane Saturday.
Passengers aboard U.S. Airways Flight 192 from Orlando, Fla. to Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport that landed on Saturday at 8 p.m. reported that two men were acting strangely, said Suzanne Trevino, a Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman.
“The passengers alerted the flight crew and they called for law enforcement and TSA officers to meet them when the plane arrived,” Trevino said.

Suzanne Trevino, a spokesperson with Transportation Security Administration (TSA), said US Airways Flight 192 was inbound from the Orlando Airport when several passengers reported seeing two other passengers talking “suspiciously.”
FBI spokesperson Manuel Johnson said a female passenger overheard the two Middle Eastern men speaking in a foreign language and reported them to airline staff.
According to Johnson, the two men were talking about being late for their flight and not being able to shop at the airport before boarding their flight to Phoenix.
The men were reportedly watching the movie “The Kingdom” on a portable DVD player while talking, and the female passenger, who was sitting near the men, thought this was suspicious and reported them to flight personnel.
TSA and officers from the Phoenix Police Department met the plane at the gate when it arrived at Sky Harbor Saturday night.
Johnson said the two men were removed from the flight and questioned by the FBI.
It was determined the men had done nothing wrong and they were released and allowed to continue on to their final destination, Los Angeles.
