Cheney warns of new attacks

Former Vice President Dick Cheney warned that there is a “high probability” that terrorists will attempt a catastrophic nuclear or biological attack in coming years, and said he fears the Obama administration’s policies will make it more likely the attempt will succeed.

In an interview Tuesday with Politico, Cheney unyieldingly defended the Bush administration’s support for the Guantanamo Bay prison and coercive interrogation of terrorism suspects.

And he asserted that President Obama will either backtrack on his stated intentions to end those policies or put the country at risk in ways more severe than most Americans — and, he charged, many members of Obama’s own team — understand.

“When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry,” Cheney said.

id think if they used it as a total sumup of a speech its more of a metaphor. subways are probably part of it but i don’t see it as an activation signal for subway attacks.

but with the recent 3 day flurry, i’m more uncomfortable than ever. anybody else here sense something bad on the horizon??

btw 110mins is a LONG time to talk..remember how nervous we’d be trying to put a 3 minute speech together in grade school? without looking through any transcripts (cuz i just wont) thats a lot of talking....i don’t care what the title of it is, they are opinionated and focused and everyone watch out a bit. keep medication/water/food staples/pet food close at hand..

you guys realize the majority of the population is dumb and clueless to the threats? before any panic happens now would be the time to stock up on stuff from the store, .. i was watching al-jazeera(english) today and not even a mention of the tape there, yknow?

I am beginning to think the whole thing in New York and Colorado is a diversion for the real operation. Think of it first he says yes then no and back and forth. In the mean time all attention is focused on them and stadiums, hotels and subways. Al Queda knew that we knew that the code word for the 9/11 attck was wedding. Would they really use it again? Perhaps the new tape out which is in 2 parts is the real code the dark tunnel. I don’t think it means the subways but something different. JNMHO

Yes and wasn't anwar Sadat assasinated by Zawahari's groups wasn't that why he was put in prison with the Blind Shieck. Sorry my spelling is bad. A fatwā approving the assassination had been obtained from Omar Abdel-Rahman, a cleric later convicted in the U.S. for his role in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Sadat was protected by four layers of security, and the army parade should have been safe due to ammunition-seizure rules. However, the officers in charge of that procedure were on hajj to Mecca.[citation needed] As air force Mirage jets flew overhead, distracting the crowd, a troop truck halted before the presidential reviewing stand, and the lead assassin, lieutenant Khalid Islambouli strode forward. Sadat stood to receive his salute, whereupon the assassins rose from the truck, firing assault rifle rounds. Islambouli lobbed three grenades at Sadat, only one of which exploded. Sadat was also hit by gunfire. After Sadat fell to the ground, people threw chairs around him to protect him from the hail of bullets. The attack lasted about two minutes. Photographer Bill Foley captured one of the last shots of a living Sadat. The photograph is titled "The Last Smile."[citation needed] Eleven others were killed, including the Cuban ambassador, an Omani general and a Coptic Orthodox bishop, and 28 were wounded, including James Tully, the Irish Minister for Defence, and four U.S. military liaison officers. Security Forces were momentarily stunned but reacted within seconds. Two of the attackers were killed and the others were arrested by military police on-site. Sadat was rushed to a hospital, where eleven doctors operated on him, but was pronounced dead within hours. Islambouli was later tried, found guilty, sentenced to death, and executed in April 1982. This was the first time in Egyptian history that the head of state had been assassinated by an Egyptian citizen. In conjunction with the assassination, an insurrection was organized in Asyut in Upper Egypt. Rebels took control of the city for a few days and 68 policemen and soldiers were killed in the fighting. Government control was not restored until paratroopers from Cairo arrived. Most of the militants convicted of fighting received light sentences and served only three years in prison.[18] Sadat was succeeded by his vice president Hosni Mubarak, whose hand was injured during the attack. Sadat's funeral was attended by a record number of dignitaries from around the world, including a rare simultaneous attendance by three former U.S. presidents: Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon. No Arab heads of state attended the funeral, apart from Sudan's President Gaafar Nimeiry. Only 3 of 24 states in the Arab League – Oman, Somalia and Sudan, sent representatives at all.[19] Sadat was buried in the unknown soldier memorial in Cairo, across the street from the stand where he was assassinated. Over three hundred Islamic radicals were indicted in the trial of assassin Khalid Islambouli, including Ayman al-Zawahiri, Omar Abdel-Rahman and Abd al-Hamid Kishk. The trial was covered by the international press and Zawahiri's knowledge of English made him the de facto spokesman for the defendants. Zawahiri was released from prison in 1984, before travelling to Afghanistan and forging a close relationship with Osama Bin Laden. Despite these facts, the nephew of the late president, Talaat al-Sadat, claimed that the assassination was an international conspiracy. On 31 October 2006, he was sentenced to a year in prison for defaming Egypt's armed forces, less than a month after he gave the interview accusing Egyptian generals of masterminding his uncle's assassination. In an interview with a Saudi television channel, he also claimed both the United States and Israel were involved: "No one from the special personal protection group of the late president fired a single shot during the killing, and not one of them has been put on trial," he said.[20] "

Oh no no - don’t apologize! I really appreciated what you posted. It’s important to back-up and put things in context of history. Yes, Zawahiri was charged with the assassination of Sadat.

It’s important to recall that Zawahiri didn’t just appear after 9/11. He’s been involved in terrorist activities for a long time, as your post indicated.

Smuggler Admits Terror Role (Canada)
September 22, 2009

A Toronto man caught smuggling handguns into Canada pleaded guilty to terrorism charges yesterday, making him the latest of the "Toronto 18" group to admit to wrongdoing.

Ali Mohamed Dirie, 26, who was born in Somalia and raised in Syria and Toronto, is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow for a sentencing hearing after pleading guilty to participating in the activities of a terrorist group. The sentence will be handed down on Oct. 2.

Algerian terror suspect arrested in Rome (Italy)
22 Sept.2009

A 41 year-old Algerian man with alleged links to a terror organisation has been arrested in the Italian capital, Rome. The man is wanted by Algerian authorities for forming and participating in the Islamist organisation, the Armed Islamic Group or GIA.

Police said the man had been on the run since 2003, after an extradition order was issued against him. The man, who at the time of his arrest held an Irish passport, was arrested by anti-terrorism police or DIGOS, at a hotel in Rome. He was detained after he matched aspects of a fugitive profile issued by international authorities.

Shoe bomber’s Colo. pen at center of terror plot

Three terrorists who attacked the World Trade Center in 1993 have sent 90 letters exhorting holy war to overseas al-Qaeda units from the same prison in Colorado where shoe bomber Richard C. Reid is doing life, angering security experts who question why the feds have relaxed curbs on Reid’s access to the outside world.

The letters were brandished like trophies and printed in Arabic newspapers, said Debra Burlingame, a member of the board of directors for the National Sept. 11 Memorial Foundation. She noted that some of those letters went to terrorists associated with the 2004 Madrid train bombings, known as the Spanish 9/11.

The Sunday Herald reported yesterday that earlier this summer, the Obama administration quietly dropped tough restrictions on Reid, who tried to blow up a Paris to Miami flight in December 2001 by igniting a bomb in his shoe. The Justice Department refused to say why the special administrative measures were lifted in the wake of a lawsuit filed by Reid challenging them.

Reid, who is still heavily monitored in prison, has refused to cooperate with efforts to uncover the al-Qaeda network that set his shoe bomb plot in motion. Security experts told the Herald that given the ongoing nature of al-Qaeda terror plots, Reid should not be allowed to expand the orbit in which he communicates.
