Are you up for a cathartic act of civil disobedience? DaveG at Wheres the Change? has a subversive plan. I like it:
"I think its time for a comeback for civil disobedience. The only thing that angers me more than the rampant elitism and corruption in our government is that apparent tolerance for it that was demonstrated most recently with the appointment of what is almost certainly a tax cheat as the Treasury Secretary. Surely I am not alone in wondering why I am a big enough sap to pay tens of thousands of dollars in Federal taxes each and every year, while our Washington bureaucrats seem to get away consequence free with a pattern of cheating and fraud. And please, dont tell me Tom Daschle didnt get away with it. Sure, he lost his position for a cabinet position, but dont you think he will be laughing all the way back to his millions-a-year consulting gig? Will he be prosecuted for his fraud like I would be? Did he pay any penalties? No, and no. Since my single, solitary vote is nothing more that a BB in a machine gun world, I intend to start practicing civil disobedience. In the case of Treasury Secretary Geithner, I am going to have a rubber stamp made that says Tax Cheat! in block letters. Every time I see a piece of paper currency with Geithners signature on it, I am going to stamp over his name with my Tax Cheat stamp. Sure, this action is just as futile as my vote, but eventually maybe others will reach the same conclusion that I have: it is far past time to make our voices heard.'
Dave has a link to an inexpensive stampmaker at his blog, or you can go to taxcheatstamps.com until, that is, Dear Leader and Dear Treasury Tax Cheater move to shut them down. Remember: Dissent is no longer patriotic.
F’ing brilliant! I’m in!
Does anyone find it troubling that a tax cheat and a liar is working on the next bank bailout as we speak?
Nam Vet
I have a red marker. I will note it.
I’m in!!
Uh. Hmm. See, one tiny problem.
I don’t blame them for not paying their taxes. I blame our government for continuing to rape the populace of their livelihoods under threat of jail and liens.
So... yeah.
Yeah, and I'm outraged that his boss and most of the politicians gave him a pass.
Make your own, it’s not hard. Just print out “Tax Cheat!” on your laser printer (small enough that it will fit just over Geithner’s name) and take it to a local rubber stamp maker.
One TINY problem?
This guy gets away with it and is now the SEC TREAS.
Not a tiny problem.
But, for the little guy who is honest, law abiding, tax paying:
We are getting screwed!
It’s the hypocrisy. This guy is an ELECTED official and he’s ripping off the very people he serves. Are the tax codes BS. . . little doubt. However, just because I disagree with taxes doesn’t mean I or Geithner or the rest of Obama’s cabinet can not pay them. You know just as well as I do that if we owed the IRS even half of what these jokers owe, we’d be in jail and everything we owned would be confiscated, let alone hold office.
No law against owning the stamp!
They’d have to find you with a bunch of stamped currency.
I say “charge me!”
They can’t stand the publicity of the trial.
I wonder if I make my next tax payment out to “Tax Cheat”, if that will get their attention?
Count me in...
I wasn’t saying their crimes were tiny problems. Worded better, “I have a tiny problem”; not to be confused with the easily twistable response (spare me).
Regardless, I agree with both of you. Point remains.
Nodding. Thanks.
One question: How soon does this Monopoly money bearing his siggy hit the street? Probably soon since the machines are going 24/7 at warp speed nowadays.
Other than that, I’m in. This is no more “dangerous” than the bills going around with “Where’s George” stamped on them w/ a web addy.
You could just write it on the bill. No stamp is necessary. But if you are going to invest a lot of time into this inspired act of civil disobedience, a stamp might be a good investment.
I am too cheap and will probably just use a pen.
