Washington, D.C., and other coastal U.S. cities could find themselves under several more feet of water than previously predicted if warming temperatures destroy the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, a new study based on a model predicts.
The West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) towers about 6,000 feet (1,800 meters) above sea level over a large section of Antarctica. It holds about 500,000 cubic miles (2.2 million cubic kilometers) of ice, about the same amount of ice contained in the Greenland Ice Sheet.
This vast swath of ice is the anchor for numerous glaciers that drain into the polar sea and is bounded by the Ross and Ronne Ice Shelves. Whether or when this ice sheet might melt is still very uncertain, but even a partial melt would have a bigger impact on some coastal areas than others.
The new research found that sea level rise would not be uniform around the globe, owing to odd gravitational effects and predicted shifts in the planet's rotation.

If Antarctica melts we’ll all drown. If the moon breaks up and falls in giant pieces to earth we’ll all be wiped out. If a large planetoid mass enters the solar system and goes careening about it will upset all of our orbits and we’ll likely get pushed into deep space where we’ll all freeze, the ones who don’t burrow deep underground into large man-made caverns where we’ll design and build an enormous fusion drive that will power the earth to another star system. Sure, it will take a long time to get there, but at least we’ll get a clean start.
Cool. Then I’d have ocean front property.
Imagine the ecological catastrophe should DC be flooded and all of that filth flow into the sea.
Your fusion drive idea may qualify for “stimulus” funding.
Is there a downside to this?
We could only hope they would be in session when it happens.
Washington, DC? That would be a very good thing!
Naw, they’ll drown in bullslop long before then!
Let it flow. It’s the one way to clean out Washington.
Al Gore says that the polar ice cap will be completely gone in 5 years!

Yet another silver lining to the whole global warming thing.
OK, I got it. Antarctic melts, only DC floods due to ...whatever crap they're talking about.
Let’s see. I’m sitting at about 700 feet above sea level.
No problem!
Not seeing a downside.

Not really.
The sea level would rise quite a bit however there would still be land to live on. And since there would be a lot more rain we would have a much greener planet.
If you plan to stay through the flood, send the babies home to Papa and me...
Sounds like a win-win to me.
Thank you!!!
