Call Congress and tell them keep the Buy American Provision in Stimulus package
Vanity | 2-4-09 | nyconse

I don't like the stimulus and would prefer it not pass...but since the GOP has added their own pork...it's going to pass. Please call Congress and the White House. Tell them if the BUY AMERICAN amendment is stripped...do not vote for the stimulus bill. I would be just as happy if it did not pass, but if tax payer dollars are going to be spent, let's stimulate the American economy and provide jobs for America-not Europe,Japan and particularly not China. Stand up for America.

—Buy American Act = Smoot-Hawley circa 1930.....—

If I had a dime every time some free trader squawks “Smoot Hawley Smoot Hawley” every time someone wants to protect the American worker and his job, I could retire!

I have my research indicated that Smoot-Hawley was a convenient excuse for Wall street and the government for destroying their economy and causing a world depression...Hoover was protectionist and actually enacted Smoot-Hawley...Roosevelt was a free trader. The GOP used to have more sense then support this fraud.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Protectionism deepens recessions.

Why spend any money outside of your own community? There are unemployed people that are suffering in your community right now. You are cheating them out of their right to full employment buying items made outside your community.

Maybe they can cobble together a LCD TV for you.

Yes, they are...however Smoot-Hawley didn’t matter in the 30’s and buy American won’t matter now...the bozo’s in Washington learned the wrong message in history and will cause a worse depression if they are not careful

The Smoot-Hawley Tariff...which Free Traders hate like the clap after a cheap hooker....was authored by two conservative Republicans and overwhelmingly supported by Republicans.

Then they were idiots.

By the way, your metaphor speaks volumes about you.

America is my community. I know free traders (didn’t say traitors you notice) prefer the global community.

We can’t buy sugar or much of anything if we lose our job because of free trade...millions of jobs have been lost.

Jobs are lost, other jobs are gained, that's capitalism. Free trade does not cause a net loss of jobs. (Over-regulation and too-high taxes do, but those are separate issues.) An American who has no skills other than as a menial farm laborer should not be producing foodstuffs with the shelf-life and durability of sugar. Period. Brazilians can produce sugar for much less and then it is easy to bag it up and ship it here. American workers and firms need to beat the competition or else you are simply transfering wealth from all American consumers to some American producers. You might as well outlaw all of those Toyota and Honda, etc. assembly plants down South in order to "protect" the Big Three in Michigan. Same same.

Someone already said it, but America is my community. Your analogy is faulty.

What are you doing to help your community when you buy produce and farm items from out of state? Aren’t you stealing what properly belongs to your local farmer?

—Hoover was protectionist and actually enacted Smoot-Hawley—

By 1941, before the Pearl Harbor attack and massive increase in defense spending, conscription etc., unemployment fell from 25 percent in 1932 to 9.9 percent—and that was with Smoot Hawley still in place. The recovery was coming despite Smoot Hawley and despite the oncoming war.

America is my community...don’t try to compare apples and oranges. Buying an American made product is beneficial to all Americans because it help the economy...certainly it is not the same as buying foreign crap...unless you consider Europe to be as important as say Texas or any other state. I was unaware that Europe contributed taxes to the US...?

Better yet! Why impoverish your family by buying stuff at STORES??? All that money LEAVES YOUR HOME when it could be CIRCULATING IN YOUR FAMILY!!!

Buy only things made by your own family members!!! Keep your money changing hands within your own family!!!

Imagine the incredible wealth your family can have if you just stop sending your money “out there.”

Perfect!
