Climate change’s Antarctic ruffle
National Post ^ | January 31, 2009 | Lawrence Solomon

How does a new Nature study conclude that Antarctica is warming when actual temperature readings show it is not?

By Lawrence Solomon

For two decades now, those predicting climate-change catastrophe have been frustrated by skeptics who ask, “If carbon dioxide is warming the planet, why does the data show Antarctica to be cooling?” Until last week, the doomsayers had all manner of complicated explanations but no slam dunk answer. Now, thanks to a new study published last week in Nature magazine, the doomsayers obtained the answer they sought — proof that any fool can understand. The bottom line: Antarctica is in fact warming, just like the rest of the planet. “Contrarians have sometime grabbed on to this idea that the entire continent of Antarctica is cooling, so how could we be talking about global warming,” elaborated Michael Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University and a co-author of the Nature study. “Now we can say: No, it’s not true ... It is not bucking the trend.”

The press seized on the findings. “Antarctica is warming, not cooling: study,” announced a Reuters headline. “Global warming hits Antarctica,” stated CNN. “Antarctica joins rest of the globe in warming,” said the Associated Press. But this study in Nature leaves many unimpressed, including top scientists from the doomsayer camp. One week after the study’s release, it is clear this study does nothing to explain the enigma of a cooling Antarctica.

The Nature authors had a daunting challenge. For one thing, the U.S. government has maintained a scientific base at the South Pole since 1957 at which temperatures have been continuously measured. The temperature readings show a cooler climate over the past half century.

That’s true science.

All our actual data shows a cooling trend, but there are large areas from which we have no data.

So we’ll just assume, using our computer models, that temperatures are rising in all the areas from which we have no data, and that this outweighs the drop in the few areas from which we have actual measurements.

Actually it’s a lot like the exit poll controversy from 2004.

Let’s assume the projected results are more accurate than the actual measured count.

It’s too late. We’re all already dead. We just forgot to fall down and bury ourselves.

The “study” is a joke. Desperate science of the worst sort. It’s been discussed on www.climateaudit.org.

To me the thing that shows that man-made global warming is a political/religious movement and not a real phenomenon is the fact that all the global alarmists rejoice at any news that supposedly shows that the planet is warming, and lament any news that shows that nothing significant is going on.

So I ask myself, why would someone welcome bad news? The only answer I can come up with is that they are not really worried about man-made global warming, they’re only worried about the hidden agenda that they want to promote by causing panic among the sheeple. Their hidden agenda? Take control of the economy and therefore the people - it’s the marxists way of taking over through the back door.

Okay.....but I don't get this part:

"The Nature authors had a daunting challenge. For one thing, the U.S. government has maintained a scientific base at the South Pole since 1957 at which temperatures have been continuously measured. The temperature readings show a cooler climate over the past half century."

A "cooler climate" or a "cooling climate?"

If the data only goes back to 1957, how can they say the last half century (1958-2008) has been cooler??? Cooler than what? 1957?

The GW phenomenon is "magical thinking". These guys all know that the last 20 glacial cycles have pretty much started when the temperature of the interglacial reached a certain point.

We reached that point about 5,000 years ago so we are LONG OVERDUE FOR NEW GLACIATION.

What they hope to do is convince themselves, and the Sun, and the Earth, that glaciation is over ~ warming is in.

The ancient Greeks would have created a god for GW, and it'd have its own devotees and temples.

We can envision it now, they'd have their priests decked out in beards, and there'd be hot boiling steam puffing out from under the temple's main floor (from the volcano it'd be built on).

muawiyah, most people don’t even know what an interglacial period is, or that they last about 10-15kyears or that we are at the tail end of one and are due for 100k years of global cooling.

Alas, all the climatologists do, and they're the ones feeding the "magical thinking".

Here we are standing at the top of a cliff that leads into 100 kyr of brutally dry, cold weather where BILLIONS WILL DIE and we're going to go over sooner or later, and we may be overdue, and there's this gang who want to make it cooler.

They are certifiably mentally ill.

.....or up their wreckumtums?

Algore and his group of mental midgets say that human civilization will cease to exist if we do not ACT NOW!

The Bush adminstration said that if we did not pass the TARP bill that our economy would collapse.

The Obamarama administration says that if we do not pass the Stimulus(sic) bill we will nose dive into a depression.

We need a trifecta. What is next? How can we position ourselves to make some money on it? We are destorying the earth for humans, we are destroying the world economies, that is a lot of stress. Shouldn’t we all start drinking and drugging our lives away?

To the government, when the rate of cooling is slowed that means it's a warming trend.

Similar to a decrease in the increased rate of spending is called a cut. For example, if the study of a Snottyobamasnarkyfish is due to have an increased rate of spending of 5% and that increase is only really going to be 3%, well, that is a cut.

You get the idea.

All our actual data shows a cooling trend, but there are large areas from which we have no data.

Oh, you mean like the South Atlantic?

And most of South America, for the wich the South Atlantic is a proxy?
