The mother who gave birth to octuplets - giving her a grand total of 14 children - has said her babies are 'miraculous'. But as more details emerged...neighbours raised questions over whether her children will have a father in their lives at all.
The woman's mother...confirmed the octuplets were indeed the result of fertility treatment - and...had had the opportunity to abort one or more...but turned it down.
It was also revealed that the woman's father - a contractor - may be forced to return to work in Iraq to help support his 14 grandchildren.
Cramped: This two or three bedroom bungalow
in Whittier, California home to the woman who gave birth
to octuplets this week
Residents....where the unidentified mother lives said they have never seen the woman who they said looks to be Hispanic - with anyone who looked like a boyfriend or husband.
A neighbour...said: 'I dont think she is married or has a partner."
Concerns...also raised over the family's home...
But the babies' grandfather said the family have a far larger house elsewhere....
'We have a huge house, not here....'You are never going to know where it is.'
...The mother of the octuplets is believed to be 33.

“Ladys got 14 kids that are probably going to be wards of the state. There might be some public interest there.”
Huh...I get that...I jess duntno why there is public interest in how they will care for the kids...I thought that our private family lives were just that...go figure...now we can beat the snot out of people that MIGHT be in violation of having babies that MIGHT become wards of the state...interesting turn of events...looks like we don’t want to “be saddled with unwanted kids” like the illustrious sage from Kenya proposed...
I’m not sure. I’ve read that on FR, but not in any of the articles I’ve seen.
For the sake of all these children, I hope it’s not the case.
If she paid it all herself, all the medical bills...it is none of our business. If we paid it, it is our business.
You’re mixing things up here. There is a public interest because the govt has decided to get into the business of forcing Americans, via ever increasing taxes, to support the kids of people who can’t. This has done no favors to the millions of children who are now born without fathers because a father is simply not needed.
If the govt didn’t spend our money to do this, you’re right, it would hardly be our business. I’d like to see some info on whether or not the family will pay the hospital bills themselves and how they are going to manage financially.
The family filed for bankruptcy and abandoned home last year. Found this:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/01/30/earlyshow/health/main4764432.shtml
1) This doctor implanted 8 (eight)empryos in a woman who already had 6 small children including 4 preschoolers.
2) The woman appears to have no husband. The grandfather appears to have been incorrectly identified as the husband.
3) The family is seeking secrecy. Why?
4) Even from a practical standpoint, who is going to care for all these children even if the state pays for their support? Can two woman, the mother and grandmother, safely care for (8) newborns, (2) 2-year olds, (1) 3-year old, (2) 4- 5 year olds, and (2) elementary age children?
Of course the two woman can't care for them? So what will happen to these little American citizens with future American passports? Will they be raised in the land of our enemies, returning later to blow themselvs up in shopping malls ?
Aren't they safer being adopted to loving American families who will treasure them?
In conclusion, this seems like some kind of bizzare Brave New World-ish baby factory scenario. And if the source is correct that all the mother's pregnancies are through fertility treatments, she may never have have had a relationship with any man so she's not breaking any Islamic law (by having sex outside of marriage).
Read "Brave New World" or "The Giver," both books about how human reproduction is separated from human sexuality and marriage.
So despite the objections of some, it looks like the dot-connecting will go on over the next few days and weeks.
“Youre mixing things up here.”
Oh. I thought it was a right to privacy issue and this violation of the conduct of a family unit that MIGHT need public assistance was just that. Sorry if I misunderstood...sometimes I don’t think these things through...it felt like we were invading their liberty just in case they were doing something or about to do something entirely legal and as far as I know, very personal...personally, I hope one of the will grow up to be president some day, but what are the chances, being born to a mother with no husband and probably raised by grandparents...but maybe they will all become wage earners and help us pay the debt to retiring Americans...
Ah, the moral high horse. Listen, as long as they can afford them --even minimally -- have as many as kids as they wants. It's all fine and good. It's nobody's business.
But the minute even one dime is taken from the tax payer to maintain these children it becomes everybody's business.
"There's been no mention of the octuplets' father, Kauffman observes.
The grandfather, she adds, is apparently going to head back to his native Iraq to earn money for the growing family. He told CBS News he's a former Iraqi military man."
Yep. We’re on the same page, and you’re asking all my questions.
I posted it on the main page, though other FReepers might be interested. This family has something very strange going on. Many, many unanswered questions.
Okay, think of it differently. Yes, the family certainly has a right not to talk to the press. But, there is no right to privacy enumerated in the Constitution. The press is not (hopefully - I wouldn’t put anything past them) suing the family to access their tax returns or medical records, and they’re not breaking and entering.
The story is:
1. Unusual - octuplets
2. Controversial - Single mom, lives with parents, already has six kids, taking fertility meds
3. Potential public interest - who is paying the million dollar tab for the birth and hospitalization?
In other words, it’s news.
I just did an image search for Suleman. Tashfeen, Muhammedd, Farid, Salim, and Shazeen appreared, among others. I don’t think they are Hispanic.
There may be a crime somewhere in all this....
Add another $1 billion to the Kalif deficit.
I don’t know anything about Medi-Cal. Do you only qualify if you are low income?
Invading their liberty?
It’s a little fascinating to me that some people actually came onto this thread to read thru it so they could tell us it wasn’t our business.
