President Obama wants a fresh approach to toppling Robert Mugabe and is discussing with aides an unprecedented, US-led diplomatic push to get tough new UN sanctions imposed against the Zimbabwe regime, The Times has learned.
During talks Mr Obama has had with his top Africa advisers in recent weeks, the central idea they focused on was taking the issue of Zimbabwe before the UN Security Council, but for the first time to combine such a move with an intense diplomatic effort to persuade Russia and China not to block the initiative.

Obama does not want us meddling in Iraq or Afghanistan but it’s fine for him to interfere in Zimbabwe. Within a week Barry has proven to be one of the biggest hypocrites ever.
if GWB was to do this he’d be called an imperialist....
Maybe Zero will move the UN to downtown Harare where they can keep a CLOSE watch on mudgoby.
Yes, I believe it’s time for the conservatives to start whining
“where’s Bin Ladin?”
Especially since they’ve returned to the “law enforcement” model instead of the “war” model.
Liberals want to go into Africa, Sudan also. This doesn’t look good. He will loose support from his anti-war base. Africans don’t like colonialism/invasion from the west.
“Hmm, I guess he doesnt like competition... ;^)”
No, Odinga doesn’t like the competition—it’s Obammy’s “cuz” callin’ in a marker.
That’s a good angle. I always worried Obama would do too little. But I think his biggest downfall will be that he tries to do too much. Having your hand in too many cookie jars is not good.
Did you want Obama to remove the guy while he was a in law school? In private practice? Even as a Senator his influence would have been limited. As president, he can leverage the UN to take tougher action against Mugabe. Granted the man is already 80+ years old and not too long for this world, but if Obama’s actions will minimize the suffering and hasten the end of this vile regime, I will stand behind him.
Ok, I wasn’t sure who it was that he campaigned for. Still, I’m sure that Odinga isn’t pleased that his cousin, Mugabe, is now being pressured by the man who campaigned for him. I wonder how this will play out? Perhaps Odinga will seek revenge and possibly now hand over information about O’s birthplace?
Actually, Raila Odinga is Obama’s cousin, not Mugabe’s. Sorry for the grammatical mix-up.
He could have started a mob demonstrating against black tyrants. Instead, he chose to join a church that rails against whites. Do you really think his heart is in the right place to remove a black tyrant who removed whites from their farms? O does not deserve what you would give him.
If Obama wants to topple that sick human rights abusing trash Mugabe, then I can support that.
My guess is this was brought to his attention by Geitner who thanked his parents for having raised him in foreign countries including time in "Rhodesia" <<< the old name of Mugabe's Zimbabwe before the Europeans were slaughtered.
To answer your question, “Do you really think his heart is in the right place to remove a black tyrant who removed whites from their farms?”, I must say “We’ll see.”
Seems like Obama is just positioning himself to take credit for the inevitable.
I really don't care, as long as he goes. Hopefully, his own people will hang him.
This looks like an issue where it is OK to meddle in other governments when our national interests aren't at stake (like in Zimbabwe or Sudan), but if our national interests are at stake (like Iraq, Iran or North Korea) then our actions don't have "pure" motives.
I thought nation building was over with the Bush admin.
Where are those whines about Bambi wanting “regime change” and “no nation-building” and wondering if he’s going to “go it alone.”
That sums up the retarded liberal foreign policy position perfectly.
If anybody finds substantial oil deposits in Sudan, we'll have to let the genocide continue.
If you want to go fight there, or donate money to the opposition, I'm sure there are opportunities. Just don't suck taxpayers like me into your world nanny state.
At last something I can support coming out of the Obama White House. Maybe O-man supported him at first but the Mugabe has proven himself a thug and must be removed. I would even support US troops with UK forces going in and setting things right. It would be a humanity thing to stop starvation and sickness to put a bullet in this tyrant.
