Food Stamps Will Stimulate the Economy More than Tax Cuts, Pelosi Says Wednesday, January 28, 2009 By Ryan Byrnes
(CNSNews.com) Food stamps and unemployment insurance will provide more economic stimulus than tax cuts, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Tuesday during a telephone press conference.
(F)ood stamps and unemployment insurance, which affect the people in the states, are necessary at this time when funds are short and the economy is down, (and) actually have the most stimulative effect on the economy, Pelosi said. Food stamps first, unemployment insurance next, infrastructure after that, and it goes on from there.
During the press conference, Pelosi laid out the contents of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which is expected to be passed in the House Wednesday. employment insurance have the most stimulative effect on the economy, and as a result are given the greatest priority in the stimulus package.
Actually, those investments bring a bigger return than the tax cuts, she said, adding: but tax cuts where we have them to the middle class we think will give us our biggest return.
The 20-minute news conference also included Govs. Edward Rendell (D-Pa.) and Jim Douglas (R-Vt.).
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will devote $20 billion to provide nutrition assistance to modest-income families and to lift restrictions that limit the amount of time individuals can receive food stamps, according to a summary of the plan released last week by the House Appropriations Committee.

Crazy like a fox.
Every time Pelosi opens her mouth and says something stupid (which is often) I keep wondering how she could top that, but she does. And to think she’s the Speaker of the House.
Well if the Government wants to subsidize my Middle class income by giving ME food stamps and unemployment benefits (even though I’m employed) then I’m sure that will stimulate the economy as much as giving me a tax cut.
This is bordering on insanity now. How do these people get elected. They are dolts.
And, since alcohol and tobacco are heavily taxed, the dems get a lot of thier money back.
I once stated that the govt. was more addicted to tobacco than the people who use it.

“Does this woman have a brain?”
Sounds like even though she said that she felt like a 10lb anvil had been lifted off her head when Bush left ... she still has 10lbs of dead weight up there.
They are operating on the level of thier constituency. They will amass more power by promising the non-productive members of our society something for nothing. And those of us that work, and have all our lives will be demanded to pay for it.
In my dreams we march on Washington, dismantle every government building and take the material back to our home states. Maybe build new additions onto our state capitols.
Am I missing something or are they mixing up stimulating the economy with boosting social programs?
And no one asks her to provide an explanation,
much less a studied proof,
that her socialist assertion has any merit to it.
I guess it’s like most things about socialism - they just accept it as truth without any thought whatsoever.
And the idiots forgot to confiscate all the guns first...
I just want to see our “representatives” show up for work and all of the government buildings are simply GONE.
Seeing them wander in puzzlement at what to do now there is no warm place to park their rears and pretend to be productive workers.
Yes, we (here) all know that this issue is not at all about “stimulating the economy” but about implementing socialism.
Unfortunately, leftists won’t debate the merits of socialism honestly. They simply deny that that is what they are doing.
Well, at least Twinkies and Lay’s Potato Chips won’t have to worry about laying off employees.
If food stamps will stimulate, then making everyone eligable will stimulate even more.
