Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore is expected to tell a Senate panel on Wednesday that the United States needs to provide leadership on the world stage in tackling climate change, a Senate aide said.

With Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry focusing a hearing on climate change, Gore is scheduled to tell the panel about the significance of global warming, and new science emerging in the field across the world.

Gore is also expected to stress steps the United States and the international community can take leading up to the negotiations on climate change in Denmark at the end of the year, Frederick Jones, spokesman for Kerry, D-Massachusetts, told CNN Tuesday.

The hearing comes amid a new U.S. commitment to the issue of climate change under the Obama administration.

On Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton named former Clinton administration climate negotiator Todd Stern a special envoy for climate change and President Obama directed the Department of Transportation to being implement fuel efficiency standards approved last year, but not employed by the Bush administration.

StormWatch 7 Weather report for today:

Our wintry mix will come to an end today, but refreezing of moisture is expected tonight. A cool but relatively quiet weather pattern should persist until early next week.

Freezing drizzle, freezing rain and sleet can be expected early this morning as you venture outside. Use caution though as it will take temperatures a few hours to climb high enough for the change-over to rain to occur. The remaining precipitation at lunchtime should be a cold rain, however, it will take longer to erode the cold layer in the Shenandoah Valley, so sleet and freezing rain will persist longer out west. Total ice accumulations of 0.10 to 0.25 inches is possible before the transition to rain. More energy and a cold front will sweep through our region this afternoon, and this should trigger more showers later today. This round of late-day precipitation should be rain as temperatures are expected to be in the mid and upper 30s.

Behind the cold front, the sky will generally clear tonight, but temperatures will drop below freezing, so residual moisture on streets and sidewalks should refreeze tonight with lows dropping into the mid 20s. Expect partly cloudy skies tomorrow with highs in the mid to upper 30s. A cold front is expected to arrive on Friday, and flurries or a brief snow shower is possible with this front. Highs on Friday will again be in the mid to upper 30s. After brief cooling on Saturday, a warming trend is expected for Sunday and Monday. Highs on Saturday should be in the lower 30s then lower 40s on Sunday. Another winter storm is possible early next week.
