It won’t surprise me one bit if they pull this stunt here in the very near future.

"Fans and evaporative cooling are good choices to minimise energy use and greenhouse gas emissions."

Extend Middle Finger......then turn up your Air Conditioner and fart a lot!

As much as I loathe overly cold air conditioners in the summer—I use a heater in my office counteract the A/C—I find it utterly ridiculous to expect anyone NOT to use their A/C when it’s over 100 degrees outside. Hell, even I turn it on when it gets above 85 or so inside my house.

The Australian gummint must be mad! 104 Fahrenheit in Oz is sweltering heat. I believe telling them not to air condition is going to expose them to serious medical risk — particularly the elderly.

Thanks, AlGore(R) Inventor-of-the-Internet(TM). You could have deaths on your hands due to “Global Warming(C)”, your latest invention.

“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,” Obama said.

“That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen,” he added.

I, myself, prefer to avoid air conditioning in hot climates. I like using shaded areas, building with large thermal mass, desert coolers and fans in order to keep things tolerable. Then when I go outside, I am ready for the heat and enjoy the day, even at 105F. If that’s too hot, I’ll move.

But that is my personal choice. I understand that the vast majority of people choose to refrigerate themselves. Who am I to dictate that they cannot?

Well caves are pretty cool too...

Lets just devolve from a modern society to cave dwellers...

That will improve the environment... Who cares about people...

I was talking to a friend in Australia last night, he said it was 107 degrees.

No A/C? Come on!

Folks, you think I'm kidding, but read this:

WASHINGTON — With utilities under growing pressure to turn to renewable energy sources, Alabama Power Co. is exploring the option of making electricity solely by burning wood or other "biomass."

The department ... is advising householders that there are many ways to keep your home cool before using air conditioners

Do tell. The only ones I know here in steamy GA require that the home be purpose built for that effect. And even then, I want AC.

"Fans and evaporative cooling are good choices...."
Welcome to 1953.

Evaporative coolers are called Swamp Coolers. They 'used to be' the thing in the USA southern/western states. I 'assume' in Australia too, their dry climate is better suited for them. (its a 'dry' heat /s)

But Heeeeeellloooo this is 2009. AC units ('condensing units') are very energy efficient now and don't leak evil gases (/s) into the air.

And NO Swamp Cooler can match an AC system for comfort. PLUS the cost of installing a Swamp Cooler system is prolly equal to or MORE than an AC system upgrade. (in 39 years I've seen ONE Swamp Cooler installed, it was a replacement. And that was back around 1986.
