Mexican collapse? Drug wars worry some Americans
The Associated Press - 2 hours ago

This isn’t Iraq or Pakistan. It’s Mexico, which the U.S. government and a growing number of experts say is becoming one of the world’s biggest security risks.
The prospect that America’s southern neighbor could melt into lawlessness provides an unexpected challenge to Barack Obama’s new government. In its latest report anticipating possible global security risks, the U.S. Joint Forces Command lumps Mexico and Pakistan together as being at risk of a “rapid and sudden collapse.”
“The Mexican possibility may seem less likely, but the government, its politicians, police and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault and pressure by criminal gangs and drug cartels,” the command said in the report published Nov. 25.
“How that internal conflict turns out over the next several years will have a major impact on the stability of the Mexican state.”
Retiring CIA chief Michael Hayden told reporters on Friday that that Mexico could rank alongside Iran as a challenge for Obama perhaps a greater problem than Iraq.
The U.S. Justice Department said last month that Mexican gangs are the “biggest organized crime threat to the United States.” National security adviser Stephen Hadley said last week that the worsening violence threatens Mexico’s very democracy.

AmAIRicans.
Dad wanted to buy ONE thing. Mom ended up buying TEN things.
So? Illegal drug distribution is an easy path to wealth. The LE community is neck deep in drug corruption. Far easier than other forms of criminal behavior. Without this easywealth there would be bo inrenational drug cartels.
The WOD is a fraud. There is no drug war as such. Only war on independent importers. After all the customers are happy to give the money away. The only reason some drugs are illegal is because they are easy to make and the AMA and Pharmaceutical companies can’t hold their monopoly. I’m sick of seeing society ripped apart so the medical monopoly can continue it’s profiteering and the bureaucracies we’ve created to stem the tide of drugs (and have failed utterly) can keep expanding.
When the US military notices a failing country, you know the OSI, CIA are already there to monitor things. The NSA has a list of bad people already. If it goes to hell, AC-130s are going to have to burn down everything a mile or two into Mexico with white phosphorous. Nothing survives that. Then the heavy equipment rolls in within 48 hours loaded and trained in Iraq. It’s easier Than Iraq was a few years ago. The males cabrones will be scared because OUR military has experience now in cities.
BobS, I don’t think there is a politician left in DC with the will to protect that border militarily, or in any manner. They’ll let the entire population, along with the countries south of Mexico come here before they’ll stop it.
And as Mexico continues to implode, the people will be here.
A letter to the editor you might appreciate.

Mexico President Felipe Calderon wants to talk to President-elect Barack Obama about better treatment of Mexicans in the United States illegally. He should change his laws to accommodate U.S. citizens before he asks the same of our country.
For four years I lived in Mazatlan and Senaloa, Mexico. My visa was good for only 180 days, and then I had to leave the country. I was told I would go to jail if I didn’t leave for 72 hours. I also had to have working papers on me or face jail and deportation.
In Mexico, no foreign citizen can hold any paying job if there is a Mexican citizen who could do the job. You have to be a citizen to own property. You can purchase property on a fee-simple, 30-year lease, but you cannot own property outright, and to own a business, you have to have a Mexican citizen as a partner.
Get caught in Mexico with a firearm or even a bullet and you will never get out of jail. Everywhere I went I was told, “If you’re going to live in Mexico, learn to speak Spanish.”
Fair is fair.

That sure brings memories. I was born in at Beaumont Hospital in 1951 and lived in El Paso until I went into the service in 1971. As a child I used to ride the bus from Eastwood Knolls to Downtown to watch movies, and I remember the Wurlitzer organ at the Plaza theater. I still have family there, but I seldom go back. It is by no means the town I left.
