A few things to note. Just because someone is new, doesn't make them a troll. We have hundreds of new sign-ups each day and very few are trolls.

Remember the abuse button. Please use that as your first option instead of pinging or FReepmailing mods. This gets to us faster.

Please respect the site and her rules like excerpt restrictions, banned sources, etc. Please also try to categorize threads correctly. The less time we have to clean those up, the more time we can go after trolls.

Have fun.

I am delighted that you have researched and are aware of these techniques. That means you may be ready. Please remain vigilant!

Interesting food for thought.

One thing that a seasoned forum like FR has going for it is that there are a lot of veterans here who can usually sniff out a troll fairly quickly. Some of the techniques described, however, do not necessarily lend themselves to sniffing out what we normally think of as “trolls” - - liberals trying to pretend they are normal, thinking humans.

No, the goal of professional trolls is not to influence opinion but simply to disrupt forums which they believe can influence political opinion.

I found “forum sliding” to be the most interesting technique, and I have often thought I sensed the technique in action. Freepers should try to remember to bump truly great threads throughout the course of the day in order to keep them in view. For example, sometimes in the morning I bump great threads from the previous evening - - “BUMP for the morning crew”.

You've missed a formulaic sort of topic-jacking.

I haven't had time to read all XXXX of the comments in this thread, but ... insert something that has been posted at least half dozen times earlier

Besides being insulting, (if you don't have time to read all the comments on a thread why should you assume anyone else should have time to read your comment?) it really mucks things up. There is some really good information in this week's epic Taitz/Kenyan CoLB thread, but unfortunately now it is buried amidst tons of duplicated stuff.

(And a belated "thank you" for an apparent solution to the JohnHuang2 duplicate article flood that regularly buried expat-FReeper-in-Asian-timezones threads on the front page).

COINTELPRO Techniques for dilution, misdirection and control of a internet forum. (Trolling 101)

Just because someone is new, doesn't make them a troll

Just because someone has been here a long time doesn't necessarily mean they aren't a troll. One poster whom we all know has been here forever.

Pinging to refresh our memory.

With this administration, I wouldn’t put anything past them. It’s never a good idea to click on links. I rarely do. I prefer a link that I can copy and paste into my browser, if I choose to. A clickable link doesn’t give you that option.
We know we have the Gestapo in DC. Use an IP hider or proxy. It’s so easy and you can get ones that are high speed. They aren’t all slow like Tor.

"Reply tricks" are more subtle. A troll posts a current story and 4 trolls make comments at the top of the thread. They're creating a false "consensus". Others coming to the thread have a tendency to "go along" or not to comment.

"Reply trolls" wreck havoc...
