House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is urging the incoming Obama administration to stick to its campaign pledge and immediately increase taxes on the wealthiest Americans, a position that President-elect Barack Obama has wavered on since winning election.
Pelosi told reporters today that she "couldn't be more clear" in opposing some Obama advisers' wish to wait for the tax cuts on the highest income earners to expire in two years, as they are set to do under current law. "Put me down as clearly as you possibly can as one who wants to have those tax cuts for the wealthiest in America repealed," she said.
Pelosi said the income tax cuts to the highest earning Americans -- which were decreased from 39.6 to 35 percent as part of the 2001 Bush tax plan -- have been "the biggest contributor to the budget deficit," which now stands at $1.2 trillion for fiscal year 2009. That deficit figure does not include the impact of the pending stimulus measure, which will cost around $800 billion, nor does it include estimates for supplemental spending bills that will come later this year to finance the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
On the campaign trail, Obama touted an immediate repeal of the Bush tax cuts for top wage earners, while promising tax relief for the bottom 95 percent of Americans. He said he planned to use increased revenues from the repeal of those tax cuts to finance some of his ambitious agenda items, including a near-universal health care plan.
As the economic situation has grown more dire, however, Obama's advisers have hinted in recent weeks that they may wait two years and allow the tax cuts for the wealthy to expire, fearful of the impact of raising taxes during a sharp recession.

I’ll agree to more taxes if I get the privilege of dropping that wrinkled bimbo out of an airplane.
Pelosi is the dimmest of dim bulbs. It's abundantly clear that she is financially illiterate - she obviously doesn't understand the difference between income and wealth.

Here is how the crats define wealthy. “the top 48% of earners in the USA. This gives them a 2% andvantage in elections. This is why they are so close. They must make sure the tax payers never out number the taxtakers again. This in turn gives the tax spenders total control of the loot.
Can’t wait for Pelosi to go down in flames.
Maybe in the house, but she has some pretty stiff competition from Patrica Bin Murray and Barbara Boxer if you include the Senate.

High income does not mean “wealthy.” It typically means “productive.”
When will they raise taxes on botox-filled trust fund twits from California who live in mansions, but pay no taxes?
The wealthy Ms. Pelosi must have all of her wealth offshore.
I have no doubt that Pelosi is an extremely mean woman. But she is very smart about her own wealth. She is worth millions, perhaps as high as $50 million. But that wealth is protected in a trust. Whatever tax-increases she pushes through congress will not touch her wealth at all.
Let’s start with the wealthy liberal Democrat politicans first.
And she doesn’t want the taxes for the revenue, as we all know that revenue will actually decrease, she wants to keep the promise to the 52% that don’t pay taxes to punish the folks who don’t vote for Dems and DO pay taxes. This is government anymore it is blackmail. What she will accomplish is push the economy “black” and offshore.
Since all revenue bills begin in the House..and she is the speaker..I guess the ball is her court.
She needs to move the ball.
I didn’t realize there were any wealthy people left.
Her husband is a multi-multi millionaire. Maybe she would like to ask him to turn it in to the government.
Sincerely,
