there is sooo many single mothers here in appalachia, it’s reaching the point of being sad. I met a girl who was 26 and was pregnant and she said she got pregnant because all her female family members had kids but her, and she felt “left out”
why should they care? they got WIC and medical cards for the kids, and food stamps. which i’m torn about.
even the good girl down the street whose family we go to church with, and she’s been very adamant about waiting...pregnant at 17. her soccer scholarship to a college was withdrawn. her pimply faced boyfriend can’t deal. i get so mad i want to cry.
I teach CCD classes for my Catholic church. Class is every Wed night. Most of the time the chapters of the book has so-so information. Last nights chapter I thought was extremely good. One of the main points of the chapter - and which I stressed in the class - that as free thinking individuals, we are responsible for our actions. I stressed as much as possible that theme to the children. I wonder if I should take these single mom stats and others such as high school drop-out rates and such and hit them with it. What do you people think? Is that a good idea? Tie it into Christian living.
Appalachia had the most independent people in the world. If government handouts can hook them they can hook anybody.
There is the hard and fast economic principle at work here. When you subsidize something you get more of it. The government subsidizes single moms.
I know the feeling.........We should go back to the “commodity” days before Kennedy-Johnson and the (Not So) Great Society. Cans of butter, flour, cheese, peanut butter, powdered eggs and what have you from the government were given out each month. You may not had money, but you had food...........
