WASHINGTON -- Roland Burris headed to Capitol Hill Tuesday to demand a seat in the 111th Congress, insisting that if he isn't allowed to take the oath of office as the next senator from Illinois, the Senate could have a lawsuit on its hands.

Participating in the theatrics, Burris was greeted by Sergeant at Arms Terrance Gainer, a door-keeper and an official from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's office before going to the appointment desk on the third floor and to the secretary of the Senate. There, his credentials were denied.

Burris was appointed by Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was arrested last month and accused of trying to sell the vacated U.S. Senate seat previously held by President-elect Barack Obama.

Adam Clayton Powell was elected, had the House refuse to seat him, then was RE-elected. Not the same as this case.

His decision to go to war with Madigan was bizarre but personally my favorite was the giving of millions to buy black votes after a historic black church burned down. Somehow he did not find any consitutional prohibitions on funding religion.

Or is it the “birthday gifts” given to his two yr old daughter by various contractors and businessmen?

I don’t know what you mean but the Congress controls who sits therein as referenced.

Mot in my tax bracket. Between state and feds and all the other taxes, close to 60% is taken in taxes - while some my fellow Americans pay zero.

Whoever thought we would see the Senate violate the Constitution...

Either you haven't been paying attention or you just forgot the ssrcasm notification.

They have been doing that every chance they have had as far back as I can remember -- and that takes in part of the Hoover Administration and their trashing of it ever since.

Ol’ Rollie will probably win the battle of getting the seat, but the Senate will win the war by shunning him for the duration of his term. He will not gain any power or support, nor will he receive any assignments other than those mandated by law, and then they will be at the bottom of the priority list.

The figure I gave of the portion of National income that goes for federal taxes is almost a constant. Programs come and go, needs rise and fall but that figure marches on.

If you are paying more than 40% for all actual taxes you need to rethink things.

The 50% which pays no federal income taxes is now in control of the government.

Ironically Burris will probably be a better Senator than Zero.
