UPDATED - ALERT - Frightening Text Messages Being Forwarded Around NY Jews January 2, 2009 3:00PM EST: [UPDATE BELOW] With the situation in Gaza deteriorating by the day, and anti-semitism rampant around the world, thousands of NY Jews were frightened upon receiving the following text message which has been going around on Friday afternoon:
“A Jewish woman gave a tip to a Muslim taxi driver and out of appreciation he warned her not to go to Manhattan next week Wednesday.”
YWN has reached out to high-ranking members of the NYPD, and have stated that although they received the same text message, “there are no credible threats to be concerned about - and don’t even know where this text message originated from”.
The only message that they do have for the public is the same message that they have been saying since 9/11. That message is “always be aware of your surroundings, be vigilant, and if you see anything suspicious contact the police department immediately to report what you have seen”.
UPDATE 3:50PM EST: YWN has just spoken with NYS Assemblyman Dov Hikind who tells us that he has received various reports regarding this ‘threat’ and has personally contacted the FBI who is currently investigating them.
He thanked YWN for our alert to calm the public, and echoed the call for calm and vigilance at anytime and any location. “If you see something, say something,” Hikind said.
“The FBI and the NYPD take these types of threats very seriously, and investigate them thoroughly to ensure the safety of the public.”

Probably because any perpetrators of such a backlash would be prosecuted with hate crimes and suffer harsher penalties than the terrorists themselves.

Aashura is replete with men self-flaggellating and cutting their heads. Ali is considered a martyr.
Find some images. Read an article about it. To Western eyes, it’s beyond odd.
Could have come up in their conversation. Lets take an example from my experience. My last cab ride was 1 1/2 years ago (stopped flying a year ago). That ride was in a city within the heart of America. During my conversation, I discovered that the cab driver was an Ethiopian Christian. He told me that the US had a secret air base in Ethiopia. Can anyone verify that cab drivers rumor (assuming of course that it is no longer a secret) ?

Ashura is on Wednesday, January 7th. It is the most sacred Shi’ite day of mourning the anniversary of the death of Husayn bin Ali (the Shia patriarch), the grandson of Muhammad.
Historically, this is the day Sunnis attack Shias as apostates (Karbala 2004, Bridge of the Imams 2005). Ashura marchers bloody and beat themselves to show piety.
Us infidels have been pretty safe on that day so far.
Wednesday is also the Coptic and Orthodox Christian Christmas.
There will be a Shia march on Park Avenue or Madison Avenue like last year.
Lots of NYPD security, though.
This would be an ideal opportunity for AQ to hit both the Shias and America with suicide/car bombers.

With the death of Ali, the Sunni/Shi’i schism started. He was murdered. There are no ‘Rashidun’ (rightly guided Caliphs) after him. A war followed his death during which the Umayyads took over (Syria).
The Shi’i further divided into 7ers and 12ers, depending on which branch you followed. The Caliphate broke apart after the Abbasids came from Persia/Iran, and ruled until Genghis Khan destroyed them, ending with the burning of the library at Alexandria.
Commemorating Aashura is really important to Iran/all of the Shi’a.
Have studied the culture since the early 1960s myself.
