These are some of the few news items where I’m happy when there’s no story. Hope the quake is the only result of this.

It was on land. Only a local tsunami possible if it caused an offshore landslide.

Pretty isolated area on New Guinea.

Looks like Palau would be in the way of any tidal wave. I hope nothing happens.

Tidal wave hits Manokwari, thousands evacuate to higher gound

Jayapura (ANTARA News) - Thousands of people living in coastal areas and in floating houses in Manokwari, West Papua province, fled to hills or other elevated places as a tidal wave hit the area at 12 am local time on Monday.

The tidal wave which reached heights of up to five meters swept through the coastal villages of Borasi, Pasar Borobudur, Wirsi, Sanggeng, Wosi, Rendani, Kampung Ambon, Pasir Putih and also reached the city center.

Earlier in the day, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale shook the Manokwari and Sorong areas but the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) said the temblor did not have the potential of triggering a tsunami.

The place is jinxed. From 2002:

West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center, NOAA/NWS

TSUNAMI of 10 October 2002

A major earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.6 occurred at 1050 UTC 10 October 2002 and was located 55 miles (90 km) S of Manokwari, Irian Jaya, Indonesia (1.71S 134.16E).

According to the Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysical Agency (BMG), the earthquake produced a local tsunami of about 3-5 meters at Oransbari and Ransiki and a small, one meter tsunami at Manokwari.

I could be wrong, but I think that area of the “bird’s neck” is a fairly populated area.

In light of all of the Yellowstone caldera news lately, I hope this stuff isn’t inter-connected. Yikes!

‘Scuse me. I just saw a closer map. That is the top of the “bird’s head” and yes, it is fairly well populated.

If Yellowstone goes up, we all go down. I share your concerns, but realise there is nothing we can do to stop or mitigate that occurrence.     :^(

Better there than what we’ve been seeing at Yellowstone recently.

I know. As far as I’m concerned it’s all in God’s hands. Always has been and always will be.
