Israel kills 205 in air assault on Gaza Strip

GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli warplanes and helicopters pounded the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Saturday, killing at least 205 people in the bloodiest one-day death toll in 60 years of conflict with the Palestinians.

Militants in the Gaza Strip, who have launched dozens of rocket attacks against Israel since a truce expired just over a week ago, fired more salvoes that killed one Israeli man and wounded several others.

Both sides said they were ready to stage wider assaults, threatening to plunge the region into a crisis that could leave stalled talks over Palestinian statehood in tatters.

Black smoke billowed over Gaza City, where the dead and wounded lay scattered on the ground after Israel bombed more than 40 security compounds, including two where Hamas was hosting graduation ceremonies for new recruits.

At the main Gaza City graduation ceremony, uniformed bodies lay in a pile and the wounded writhed in pain. Some rescue workers beat their heads and shouted "God is greatest." One badly wounded man quietly recited verses from the Koran.

More than 700 Palestinians were wounded in all, medics said.

Israel said the operation, dubbed "Solid Lead," targeted "terrorist infrastructure" following days of rocket attacks on southern Israel that caused damage but few injuries. An army spokeswoman said Hamas leaders could be targeted.

"There is a time for calm and a time for fighting, and now the time has come to fight," Defense Minister Ehud Barak said.

The rocket attacks increased pressure on Israeli political leaders to act as a February 10 election approaches.

The army did not set a timeframe but the mayor of Ashkelon, an Israeli city in range of Hamas's rockets, said military planners saw the operation lasting "more than a week."

Absolutely. and I told all the Jewish liberals that I had contact with that this was so before the election. They choose not to believe me, and whatever happens after the election is on their own heads.

Fortunately for Israel, the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob is on their side, while all the Palestinians have is the counterfeit god, Allah.

Time for an in-depth discussion at the UN, that should fix it. Meanwhile the US, in a show of good faith and support for just about everybody, could surrender - to someone or other.

It’s a decent start, but it’s just a start.

That’s the funniest post I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen those pictures of the lady “getting bombed” out of a few apartments and that photoshopery is perfect.

“Now, you know it is going to come.”

Israel knows it’s coming too. Unless they’re stupid they must know EVERY western nation is going to disown them. Even Bush/Rice are going to gripe about escalation or something.

The fact they’ve done this despite the coming outcry and despite the retaliation tells me they plan on wiping Hamas out. I can see how I might be wrong about that but I’m hoping I’m right.

Liberals unfortunately don’t care about Israel. My family are all from Israel, we still have family there, cousins, aunts, etc, a few months ago I was talking to my liberal cousin(Who I can’t stand) and I asked him about Israel, and he said “Oh that’s my Dad’s thing not mine” his cousins live in Israel, but he doesn’t care, that is the liberal mindset. Liberal Jews see Israel as killers, while the rest of us Jews vow to protect Israel til the day we die. My Dad fought in the 67 war, my sister’s boyfriend(israeli born) said that if Israel goes to war he will go back and defend his country. The Jews who voted for Obama are gonna see what I warned them about, that he will NOT be a defender of Israel, his priorities are with the muslim world, he said so in his book, so why should his “no reaction” not be a surprise. He will make Hillary do all the dirty work for him and when something goes wrong, Hillary will be blamed for it, the fall guy

"The United Nations and the European Union, in contrast, called for an immediate halt to all violence."

I don't remember them calling for an end to violence when the "Palestinians" broke the truce and begin firing rockets into Israel every day.

It's only a crisis to the EU and the UN when Israel is winning.

If Hillary doesn’t catch the blame, W will. I wonder how long Zero will try to get away with blaming everything on W?

BTW, Sarah Barracuda, my prayers are for Israel and your family there. Please keep us informed!

Is he still on vacation in Hawaii?

He said “if they need me they can call me” during the economic crisis...I’m sure he’ll know just what to do...

Just heard on Fox News: The Israelis publicly announced vacation time for some of their own military, taking Hamas off guard to the extent that they held some kind of public graduation ceremony of their own military cadets (or whatever they call them), and THIS, in turn provided a great opportunity for the Israelis to kill some senior and junior Hamas critters.

This is the old-time Israel that I like - happy to know that they still got it in ‘em.

BTW, for the those like me without cable, I’m presently getting Fox News here: http://www.blinkotv.com/

I think you need Abobe Flash software (which most people have), then you adjust the “Now Playing” thingy above the video box to “Fox News.”

I used to post at prosemiteundercover, or something like that. They were mainly liberal, but they let me post some very conservative things, although I could tell that I irritated them at times.

They seemed to be very concerned about Israel, but were unwilling to make the connection that the Palestinians wanted to kill them, and they had to do something about it if they wanted Israel to survive. Not all of them, of course.

There was one real asshole, a total moron, on that board. His name was Gabyspoppy, (sounds like a flower, doesn't it, I thought he was a woman). Unfortunately, he was a “co-owner” of the board. Still, despite his efforts to get me banned, he was unsuccessful until one day I had had all that I was willing to take from him. He seemed to think that the rules against personal attacks either didn't apply to him, that they didn't apply when the attacks were on me.

Anyway, I finally told him off, and told him if he could do it, ban and be damned. He made it a ‘bottom-line’ kind of thing with the other administrators, and I got banned. Well, I knew I could be, and don't regret my decision. I didn’t treat him nearly as badly as he did me.

However, I enjoyed my time there. If you like to argue with fairly liberal Jewish persons, and I do, it's a good site.

Many years ago (40 to be exact) I thought that I was a “pretty bad dude.” Ray Rebstock kicked my butt from one end of the bar to the other with fists, beer bottles and his boots. (God cracked ribs hurt!) This altered my precept ion of what I could get away with and could not and slso made me realize that I was not as bad as I thought I was.

It is time that Israel pull a Ray Rebstock on their enemies and the hell with world opinion.
