I have read all of Flynn's works. I have liked every one of them and not been disappointed.
This book was no different, though it was less a front to back barnstormer about his principle character and action hero, Mitch Rapp, than others have been.
But that's okay, I believe Flynn did that on purpose to make some other points, and the book is nonetheless a great read, delivering a timely and critical message I believe is important for all Americans to understand.
It was, for me, still a captivating thriller with enough action, and delivering a very important message for our society which I believe was the thrust of Flynn's effort here...as well as showing some of the personal cost warriors such as Rapp and Nash pay in the clandestine services while defending our nation against its enemies.
All in all, I believe the novel is a very exciting one, mingling all of these goals together into one, and I give it five stars.
Importantly, I also believe it is an excellent expose about what manner of enemy we are fighting in the Islamic Jihadists, and what measures it takes to stop them...and an equally well done expose on how the political correctness of the day, and wrangling of our current politicians can not only impeded the effort, but invite the carnage to our shores.
I would recommend "Extreme Measures" for anyone wanting to see into the mind of the enemey, and for anyone wanting to see what manner of heroes we have fighting to stop that enemy against all odds, the largest of which that are stacked against them residing right here within our own borders and within the halls of our own political institutions.
Strongly recommend beginning at the beginning. The story line and cast of characters is built with each book. Lot’s of history in each book that you won’t understand unless you read them in order!
I sure envy Flynn’s commercial success, but I think his writing is rotten, and his characters are cartoonish. Mitch Rapp is just the latest rehash of superduper heros like Dirk Pitt and so on. They are secretly meeting the President in the Oval Office one minute, the next they are doing a HAHO jump with Delta into an Arab capital to kidnap a jihad mastermind, and torture him to an inch of his life, before stealing an enemy fighter jet and personally flying it back to make their report. They also speak ten languages perfectly, and have supermodel triple agent girlfriends begging for them. I prefer a tad more realism even in thrillers, or pictures to go with the cartoon plotlines. I’d recommend early DeMille, Gerald Seymour (a Brit), early Stephen Hunter and some others.
You’d probably like this novel of his better...less all out Mitch Rapp in this one and a lot more messaging, IMHIO, about a topic that needs saying.
I’m listening to EXTREME MEASURES right now in my car. Mitch
Rapp is definitely in my top 5 all-time series characters. I absolutely love these books.
I’ve been meaning to post a review of another must-read novel for conservatives, THE LAST CENTURION by John Ringo. Trust me, buy it TODAY.
MM
I will pick up The Last Centurian and read it. Read some reader reviews on Amazon and it looks really good.
Got all of his works. Start with the beginning. TERM LIMITS.
BTW, here's my new book cover, just created.
bttt
Thanks for the ping!
Thanks for the heads up. I will scratch Cussler off my list for all time. I try to make sure anyone hoping to profit from the globull warming scam doesn't get any money from me. OTOH, I've been a Flynn fan for a long time.
You might try Brad Thor too!!....
I'll be getting one as soon as they go to press. Le tme know when and I will post a thread here on FR about it.
Just starting another novel myself. Got another itch that needs scratching.
When I finish that one...I'm thinking about a sequal series to:
Thanks. Will look into those novels too.
BUMP’ed back! A very Merry Christmas to you both! May His Peace be with, comfort and guide you and yours!
I love these books!
...So does my husband.
I don't care which order I read them....usually skip around.
That drives my husband crazy as he is a... 'start at the beginning'... type of guy...
..so he won't read anything out of sequence.
Vince Flynn books appeal to patriots!
The covers are kept simple, since most folks will first see an internet thumbnail.
What’s your next novel going to be about?
You have Fremail on it.
Merry Christmas to you, dear Jeff Head! May God bless you and all your loved ones.
In gerneral, most women would not read Vince Flynn, but I'm not "most women". I love the series and just finished "Term Limits". Excellent read. I would recommend you read them in order. You get a feel for the whole story that way and understand references in later books. I would say if you like the TV show "24" you will like Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp.
Sorry, I meant to say I just finished “Extreme Measures”.
