The Miami Herald and Chicago Tribune have practically announced bankruptcy and are both now valued at less than the value of the real estate they own (prime bay-front property in Miami and a skyscraper in Chicago).
Even better, McClatchy Newspapers itself, a newspaper chain with a documented anti-male bias, is saddled with so much debt that it will probably not last through 2009...
~~snip~~
A vestige of Andrew Martons article can be found at FreeRepublic.com where you can see that this once-conservative forum is now dominated by man-hating old women and FReepers discussing the story were no allowed to mention the word feminism in regard to the FReeper nmhs hate-filled diatribes against men who would date foreign women (I know first-hand that any such comments mentioning feminism were deleted).
Exhibit C: The forum FreeRepublic.com was once a place for conservative men to bash feminism freely and often. It was the favorite topic for years. But, since early 2006, most anti-feminist FReepers have had their accounts deleted so as not to antagonize the aging baby boomer females the crippled owner, Jim Robinson, wants to keep in the Republican Party. Jim Robinsons attitude seems to be just like that of Rupert Murdoch of Fox News he seems to think that strong feminist women should be the backbone of the Republican Party. This is insane. I do NOT think these men are motivated by the concept that 80% of corporate purchase decisions are made by women.
It is easy to logon as a member of the once-mighty conservative FreeRepublic.com. Try doing so and mentioning feminism in a comment somewhere. See how quickly you can be deleted.
Then watch how the readership of the blog has fallen considerably since they turned feminist.
Where was the monetary advantage for this conservative forum to go feminist?

I usually tend to think of posters as male until they post something that makes me believe otherwise.
In FO’s case, I always thought she was a woman. If she was really a he, I’d guess he was of the effeminate version. Hence, the Mehlman comment struck me as particularly humorous.
Needless to say, FO lives on under alternative freeper names, posting unbelievable hype from the latest version of talking points.
Likely so.
If she was really a he, Id guess he was of the effeminate version.
That was my conclusion.
Names such as FOs immeadiately raise a flag for me.
As in they start with Not-Fair-Opinion with me.
BTW, for what it’s worth, I wish that were true for me!
Yep!
I wish that were true for me!
LOL!
Well, mine should be wanna-be-cowgirl-stuck-in-urban-hell! LOL.
(Actually, not quite hell... the great Pacific Ocean does have benefits ya can't find on the ranch) ;-)
i guess we should have a debate of whether or not al gore is a man, asexual or a robot?
Good call, you summed it up. I think it could be both - he seems to be morphing into an asexual robot.
You've never seen the pics of the Mods?
That oughta zap yer Zot!
Here's a picture of the girl mods.
So that’s her site now, huh?
: >)
Hot damn! I’m hoping the one on the right will be playing Ms. Claus this year so I can tell her what I want for Christmas, LOL
Wow, Jim. Did you know you had turned into such a flaming feminist?
So no prob.
An astute observation! ;)
As you describe it I’ve no problem. Only why not do it on a personal basis instead of it being an FR thing (at least that’s how I interpret your idea...I may be wrong). Set up your own matrix and see how people fall in place on it. I believe mnehrling had a matrix he posted during the primaries that showed where candidates fell on the political spectrum.
Like you, I tend to stay away from those who’ve outed themselves; Paulettes especially. Not just because of their political stance but because they pontificate and patronize anyone not in lock step with them. THAT’S why I don’t want something like this to become overbearing. I’ve experienced it from the other end from those yokels.
So, go for it. If Jim believes it’s something beneficial for FR, fine. But FR has existed for how many years without such a tool, is it really necessary now? I simply believe in our monitoring our interactions ourselves, calling on the Viking Kitties when necessary to deal with the obvious Troll. It works when needed and also provides an amount of good entertainment; especially when they let us play awhile. That’s something I look forward to...
Things like this have caused a decrease in critical thinking. It has gotten bad lately, especially with things like the COLB. If you dare question anything, you are labeled a 'anti-Constitution', Obama supporting traitor (and don't even let me get into the FReepmails..) all for daring question, for example, the credentials of the person who claimed to be an expert saying the COLB was fake. This is just an example, but you can see this type of hostility to critical thinking popping up on a lot of things. Thinking critically doesn't mean you disagree, it means you are trying to get the facts out of the static and not blindly following. Far too many want just a sounding board with no exploration or challenge. It is almost as if they don't believe strongly in their argument so they are afraid of any challenge that may make that argument crumble. The litmus test may be similar, some may want it because they are insecure in their own belief and if someone doesn't share the exact same priority and dot on the chart, they see it as threatening. Not a way to strengthen your own thinking.
(for example, my political compass.)
Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: 8.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.62
Wow, sounds like someone (the article writer) is insecure with his own sexuality and is blaming it on FR because it doesn't have enough feminism bashing for him.. apparently he doesn't read enough or, as I said to another poster, he is so insecure in his own belief or situation if others don't use the exact same wording or tone he wants, he takes it as a threat. I've seen rants like this before on other forums, whining and whining they or someone they liked where kicked off.. they almost always say it was because this site is 'not conservative any more'.. in reality, some I've seen, it is because they are stormfront freaks or conspiracy kooks.
It is the infamous Rorschach Test. What he sees is a reflection of what is in himself, not what is actually on the site. If you hold this image up, he would see a feminist threat to his sexuality.
As you describe it Ive no problem. Only why not do it on a personal basis instead of it being an FR thing (at least thats how I interpret your idea...I may be wrong).
***It’s too much work for one person, and such a project would need access to the ability to post Excel files on FR.
Set up your own matrix and see how people fall in place on it. I believe mnehrling had a matrix he posted during the primaries that showed where candidates fell on the political spectrum.
***That was Mnehrling’s matrix, his own interpretation, right? This would be the self-selecting matrix that FReeper answers himself. For instance, for Immigration we might have a question like: Amnesty for Illegal aliens.
1= I agree 2= I think we might have to bite the bullet on this 3= I’m in the middle or can’t make up my mind 4= I think we should find other answers, Amnesty will just encourage more illegal aliens in the future. 5= I disagree
If there were 50 questions and each FReeper could allocate 200 points (or whatever, it doesn’t really matter), then we could see that if they dedicate zero points of importance to this issue and they answer 1, that’s about all I would need to know in how to approach them. Zero points, and they’re logging onto a thread? Fishy. 10 points and they answer 1, it could be an interesting discussion.
Like you, I tend to stay away from those whove outed themselves; Paulettes especially.
***Then we need a tool where everyone outs themselves. It is the process of hiding that gives RINOs their power.
Not just because of their political stance but because they pontificate and patronize anyone not in lock step with them. THATS why I dont want something like this to become overbearing. Ive experienced it from the other end from those yokels.
***Once the yokel is outed, it makes the FReeping interaction with them much simpler and straightforward.
So, go for it. If Jim believes its something beneficial for FR, fine. But FR has existed for how many years without such a tool, is it really necessary now?
***Yes, it is necessary. Let’s find out if Jim believes it would be beneficial. From his initial response to it, it looks like a no, but look how you have turned around on this issue once you got past the dismissive stage.
I simply believe in our monitoring our interactions ourselves, calling on the Viking Kitties when necessary to deal with the obvious Troll. It works when needed and also provides an amount of good entertainment; especially when they let us play awhile. Thats something I look forward to...
***This isn’t a tool for dealing with trolls. It is a tool for dealing with people who claim to be conservative but when the rubber meets the road, they really aren’t. They’re CINOs coming alongside the leader of the parade, whispering directions to him and then scurrying back into the crowd when the time for straightforward openness is called for.
I think the matrix he was referring to was from On The Issues. http://www.ontheissues.org/default.htm
(click on a politician and scroll to the bottom of the page for their grid)
I just see something like that as a basic starting point to compare head to head, much better for candidates than other posters. As you pointed out, and I mentioned to bcsco in another comment, it doesn't weigh each individual's issue importance.
