This weekend's Kennedy Center Honors marked the last time President Bush and first lady Laura Bush sat alongside the honorees as they watched the tributes unfold on the stage of the institution's opera house last night.
Roger Daltrey, who was feted along with a fellow member of the rock group the Who, said the award "means so much."
The outgoing president hosted not only one of his wife's favorite musicians - it was the first time a first lady took the stage in the event's 31-year history - but also one of his biggest Hollywood detractors.

This year's honorees - actor Morgan Freeman, country music legend George Jones, choreographer Twyla Tharp, actress and singer Barbra Streisand and rockers Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey of the Who - were toasted by celebrities in arts and politics in a whirl of weekend events that culminated in last night's Honors Gala.
The star-studded event at the Kennedy Center Opera House, hosted by presidential daughter Caroline Kennedy Schossberg, will be broadcast Dec. 30 on CBS.
The president and Mrs. Bush received the honorees at the White House Sunday. All eyes were on the president and the diva - Miss Streisand has been an outspoken critic of this administration.
Rather than exchange barbs, though, the pair exchanged kisses.

Would you rather the President had stuck his leg out and tripped her?
“Would you rather the President had stuck his leg out and tripped her?”
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>............
Yes of course..Bush kissed her what a jerk he truly has become..His staff is just awful to put him in the same room with her. Bushed out.
While I can’t speak for the Pres, I can personally say that I’d as soon kiss a dead skunk’s backside than Babs any day!
“Miss Streisand has been an outspoken critic of this administration. Rather than exchange barbs, though, the pair exchanged kisses.”
Poor W. The things a President has to suffer through. (Cringe)
“The Who boys I can understand but BS and Freeman should be ashamed for their lack of dignity to the anthem. Of course President Bush, our fine First Lady and Vice-President Cheney have true class.”
I read recently that Morgan Freeman still has problems with his hand and arm from his recent auto crash. Could it be that he has a medical reason for his posture? Just asking.
“Who and the Possum!”
Cute. The possum did show up.
Is that George Jones standing next to the First Lady? If it is, he didn’t place his hand over his heart either.
“Placing ones hand o’er heart during another country’s national anthem would be an act of respect rather than allegiance.”
I can clearly remember it, even though it was more than fifty years ago. Standing on a tarmac in another country. When the host country national anthem was played we respectfully stood at rigid attention. When the Stars and bars began you could literally hear the starch break in the uniforms as we all stiffened in unison and put our right hands over our hearts. To experience that is to know what our military does and why.
Apparently, Laura and and the President are big fans of George Jones.

God bless Pres. Bush .. kind and gracious
to all the people, even the hateful ones.
Sometimes I complain about my job, but I'd take it over his any day. At least I know Babs isn't going to show up.
Because HE is a gentleman...
....SHE is no lady!
So true.
The only reason she’s stayed is because she knows that in other countries she wouldn’t be as regarded as she si here. In other countries people in entertainment are considered to be part of the lower classes and are treated accordingly.
