TEHRAN (AFP) — Iranian students held a protest on Sunday at Tehran University calling for freedom and denouncing the policies of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a pro-reform student group said.

The protest amid heavy security was organised by the radical pro-reform Office to Consolidate Unity (OCU) student group to mark National Student Day.

"There was tough control, they (authorities) would not let anyone in but students broke the gate and came in," OCU member Mehdi Arabshahi told AFP.

"A lot of protests were directed at Ahmadinejad over oppression in universities and bad economy," he said.

"The protesters also demanded academic freedom and respect for human rights," Ararbshahi said.

To paraphrase Rush....Any ass can complain about free speech in America, it takes a brave person to protest in Iran.

WWOD?

Obama would demand the students to talk only about their "neighbourhood" and order to make place for a pro-regime protest. Fairness, balance and localism you know.

The saddest part about this is that many people actually consider Bush worst then Mahmoud when Bush is a saint compared to that man.

If our enemies don’t hate freedom, then why do they refuse to grant it to their own people?

Now, I don’t believe in spreading democracy by the sword, but these people deserve at least our moral support. They’re standing for the same thing our forefathers stood for on Lexington Green 233 years ago. We as a people ought to be standing with them, just as men from abroad with names like la Fayette, von Steuben and Pulaski stood with us then.

At the very least, our leaders ought to make it clear that we aren’t neutral in the fight between the mullahs and those Persians who want to be free.
