Hey, howzabout this? Their socio-economic condition is not the cause of this but they are in their socio-economic condition because of this. A single mother with no education and work ethic is likely to raise stupid kids with no discipline.

Generally, in this country you are poor because you have no idea how to not be poor, i.e. get away from areas with no jobs, get an education in a field that actually pays a decent salary, learn a marketable skill, DON’T HAVE CHILDREN OUT OF WEDLOCK, etc.

The lower down the economic pecking order, the less likely the parents (mother) has books and reads them to the child. However, there would be an exception in low income Asian-American households. I don't imagine the researchers looked very far into that exception.
